Peel back the carpet next to the door pillar and check the mechanical linkage... also you should find the solenoid there and not behind the dash...

What type is it, i.e. button on the rear wing, or under the door mirror?

Okay, older style (mine) is a piece of coathanger wire connecting the button to the release mechanism, which you don't need to worry about... I'd still peel back the carpet and have a look in the door pillar... if just to rule out problems in that area.

The internal knob works mechanically(cable operated) the mirror button electrically.
If you can hear the dash relay clicking but no door opening it is probably a dead solenoid mounted above the seat belt behind the panel - worth checking first.

Should you need a new one the cheapest source is Maplins.

Yep, does sound like solenoid, there will be two in the door enclosure, one with two wires one with two, a doddle to fit, both available from Maplins one has two wires, one has five, both under a tenner.

From memory I think the part numbers are YB79L and YB78L but check first.
