Over the past 12 months, Other models like the Chims and Griffs seem to have managed to hold there values reasonably well, but Cerbera proces seem to have taken a big hit, and there have been plenty of threads from us Cerb owners expressing the desire that the prices will one day start to pick up again. Another common theme on the threads is advising newbie owners that this forum should be there main source of advice and help in purchasing a Cerbera The effect of this is that the PH Cerbera forum has become an influential and primary information source for prospective Cerbera owners.

Cerbera prices have fallen, and every week there is a new topic posted from newbie/prospective owners asking for advice on purchasing one. 95% of these topics are from people looking at the bottom end of the market, in other words, people who have been attracted by the now affordable prices.

And what advice is ALWAYS given to these prospective owners by all us Cerbera owners?? Every single f******g thread has people saying "That is too expensive - offer him about £2 k less" So is that the main point of this Forum now? To try and talk down the prices of our cars so that people who cant really afford them will be able to buy them.

Do you think? I thought prices had risen again, with several 1998 cars being in the £15-16k price range. There was a point over winter when they'd dropped a couple of grand from there.

Gotta agree in part with what you say Jens. I don't understand the logic of encouraging lower prices at the expense of devaluing your own car. Sure it's fair enough when something's drastically over priced or looks suspicious to air our views and give good advice based on experience to potential owners.

But if they start dropping to the level of hot hatches which most owners expect to cost peanuts to run will those owner be prepared to put the nessecary money in upkeep or simply neglect it and move it on at an even lower price when the bills loom?

My point is as parts become scarcer and require remanufacture will any company bother if there's a dwindling supply of cars and owners either willing or able to invest in their upkeep to allow them to recoup their investment in tooling etc. That way we all suffer in the long run. Remeber windscreens? a small part but without it the cars useless and of no value other than for parts.

Don't get me wrong I'm not thinking the Cerbera will turn into a latter day GTO that must be protected for future generations to drool over but it's definitely got a certain something that I would have thought would turn it into a future classic.

I'm not selling and hopefully won't need to but if I did I'd rather keep it than let it go for some of the prices I see lately.

All in MHO of course.
David

Another thing i think lower the prices is the negative discussions about relaibility. It is a "supercar" and should be treated as one.
After that i sorted my car out i haven´t had a single problem with it for the last year. The reason i had to sort my car out was that the car hadn´t been taken care of as i think it should be done.

So my conclusion about relaibility is: Take care of your Cerb and it will give you a lot of fun driving and not that many of problems. I am that confident in my Cerb so me and my family have plans to drive it from where we live in Sweden to Rockingham in august, it will be a trip of about 2.200 miles during a week or two.

Good Point.

There are 46 undamaged Cerbs for sale in the PH Classifieds and 28 of them are up for £15000 or less.
Sad really, it just makes me wonder how some of these cars will end up when corners are cut on servicing, maintainance, etc, which I believe will happen when these extra/unexpected costs cannot be met.
Very sad indeed.....
Regards
Simon.

As ever there is a balance to be had, I had no worries recommending Gazzabs to be bought at the asking price, it was I think worth every penny - however then there was another one that cropped up that looked tidy but had been only driven 300 miles in the last year, self serviced for the last 2 and had a tapping noise, yet the price was still IMO high for a car with those aspects and when compared to Gazzabs which had just gone through with proper history and a rebuild.

Endless running down of the prices is as you say counter-productive and yes it does happen to a degree - the advice should ideally be justified with links to alternatives which are better cars for the same money or the same level for less - we have to be wary of ramping up prices (these are potential Cerb owning brethren) as much as we should be aware of running them down.

Of relevance to this thread I just spotted this:

www.pistonheads.com/sales/167507.htm

Now much as I would love to say it was on the money pricewise, I would have no qualms with telling someone I thought it was a bit steep.

Most excellent colour (but then it doesn't say much about the state of the metal bits I guess), and the number plate looks, well quite spooky to me, wonder who the original owner was...scratchchin

Back on topic it is a shame when cars seem affordable, aren't maintained properly - which only perpetuates the reputation of the cars

Don't know who done the headlight conversion as it's the same one I had done on mine and it most definately wasn't £3500. In fact I had the whole car resprayed and all the carbon window trim replaced and a bunch of other stuff on top of that for the same price.

On Topic: I'm glad I sold my Cerb when I did because I was thinking the exact same thoughts as the OP about two years ago. Back then there were some ex-cerb owners talking down the prices everytime somebody came on asking about a car or prices. I guess some things never change in that respect. (And I don't think my comments above qualify in the same context as that is a bit of a ridiculous price for that work if that's all that was done).
This forum is most likely the first port of call for info on a Cerb, especially if it's an ad on the PH classifieds, so the only people being stung by all negative price talk are the people selling and the owners who might be selling in the future.

Personally, I couldn't care less if people give them away for free.

You're not telling me, anyone on here actually bought their Cerbera as an investment.

They're like most cars, they lose money. I've got one that I spent £10k on last year, that I'd be lucky to get £10k for.

If you think Cerbs are cheap, have a look at the 2001 Tuscans in the classifieds.

If they lose a couple of grand a year in depreciation, who cares ? It's nothing in the grand scheme of running one on a daily basis.

If you think that a clutch & 12k service costs over £2k, is a bit of depreciation all that much

The problem is as the price fails, they'll be purchased as a short term car. The car will need serviving / repairing , this won't get done and damage will be done. The cars will either end up smashed or ragged until the engine pops and scrapped.

These are super cars with the associated costs (nothing like a fezza or Lambo though). There's no cheap way of owning a TVR, just rewarding driving. You get what you pay for.

My car is priceless, not for sale and in my opion a true future classic.

Yes you can buy a car with what it takes to run a cerb but you will never buy a car with such a smile effect.

It really is hard not to tell somebody not to buy a cerb if they cannot in the long run look after it in a manner it needs to be. Does the low prices help in the long run...no they do not. All that happens is they are bought by Master GTi and sold on as a cheap second hand or more likely sixth hand british classics.

I cannot tell anybody what price to sell a car at as somebody may need that cash asap but if you could hang on and sell at a more realistic price then more's the better for all cerbs in the future.

Well that's my two pennys worth.

PS. Mine's 30K and rising.

I think it all depends on whose buying. If its a buyer thats done his homework on Cerbs and wants a sorted car then im sure that they will pay the appropriate price for the car.If its ex-GTI boy who knows f**k all about Cerbs he is gonna go for the cheaper end of the market and end up with the associated bills.A good Cerb will fetch a good price.

Interestingly, some of the cars on the classifieds I recognise from a year ago when I was looking, such as www.pistonheads.com/sales/79292.htm and www.pistonheads.com/sales/65424.htm
