Due to tour France for two weeks in July and reckon cover of some sort would be very sensible for my '96 Chimp - but not sure who to approach - AA, RAC or any others, and do they just offer cover for perhaps 1 month ?
Could anyone advise please ?

The RAC certainly do you don't have to be a member either.
Go to their website put in the dates required and quote comes back.

Just for information,
I was stuck in Germany in March. Called the AA who advised me that my menbership had not been renewed in 2005 and so they wanted a one off payment of 350 quid.
This would then give me a once per year continental call out.

So I called the German ADAC who came to me straight away and fixed my problem free of charge.
I joined them that day with full European cover for 83euro. 4 weeks later I had serious engine problems which require my Tuscan to be shipped back to the UK for warrantee work.

ADAC said "no problem Hr Jones your covered" so free delivery back to Str8 Six in the UK and they gave me a curtesy car. Very Very good organisation.

Very interested in this thread. Im planning a bid drive this year France -> Italy -> Spain -> home (maybe Germany too)

Ive bee with the RAC for years but hadnt considered a new policy with a mainland European company.

EDIT* The RAC cover doesnt include recoverying the car back to the UK. Bit pointless without that really.

Had good experience with RAC.
Last year at Le Mans & with the World Cup on they had british patrols in Germany and France. We called them out for a starting problem (flat battery!! - to much beer and music) and they were on site in about 30 mins!!

Fed this back when I got home and generally felt that somebody cared to hear what I had to say.

Took out RAC european cover last year for a trip to Italy and did I need it took on a tankful of dodgy fuel south of Rheims and they were excellent arranged for the car to be recovered on the Saturday afternoon found us a hotel close by, then found us a hire car on the Sunday morning with all taxis provided everything foc or quickly reimbursed on our return if they could not get someone to accept there guarantee, kept us well informed of the progress on our car which needed a new fuel filter. The one downside to having a TVR is that unless its something fairly simple a quick fix is out of the question and to get a new fuel filter took a week but the car was fixed for our return through France and they allowed us travel time on the hire car anyway the C4 did the job so the holiday was not completely ruined. They will repair if at all possible rather than repatriate the car as obviously this saves them money and dont expect them to take it to TVR France but still the best £62.00 spent for the two weeks cover

Say it was a major problem like a gearbox or something, whould they have recovered the car back to your house in the UK?

Just fixed up cover for next month, already with the R.A.C. but chose A.A. for europe because of the greater hire car allowance £120 per day up to £1200 max as i did not fancy the prospect of driving through germany, austria, italy and france in a astra in the event of a unrepairable breakdown. RAC allow only £65 per day i think, so it's worth thinking about should the worst happen and you should still be able to enjoy your holiday and get a decent replacement for £120 a day. The AA also ship your car back home as long as the cost is less than the value of your car.

I had AA cover for my trip last year and had to use them when my clutch went in Switzerland. First off they couldn't get me a hire car for 2 days.
Secondly the only way I could get them to admit liability and pay for the damage my car sustained during recovery was to issue court proceedings. I had a stack of evidence proving the car was damaged in transit but they point blank refused to listen.
Suffice to say I'll NEVER recommend the AA again either for UK or European cover.

£120 or £65 per day if all the rental company has is a micra your going to take the car, I actually offered to take a downgrade if it meant we could get moving again rather than waiting another day or two and we managed to cacth up our little group on the Sunday evening,if the car had not been fixed as I understand both ourselves and the car would have been returned home with us travelling along with the recovery vehicle ?
