Guys and Girls,

Has anyone heard a 3.4 987 S with a PSE? Or a cayman as it is the same engine they presumably sound the same... Any opinions on the noise?

They have only just started doing them for the Boxster I think.

Try before you buy. Porsche had problems because the 996 era sports exhaust was judged to be too loud, possibly illegal. So 997/987 PSE may disappoint you as well as costing a packet.

Thanks guys, sounds good - I had a 986 exhaust and loved that, didn't think it was too loud so hopefully this won't be either...

I thought the sports exhaust had a switch to turn it quieter? Or was that yet another option?

If you have sports chrono, the exhaust is linked to the sport switch but if not I presume it is on all the time.

With sports chrono it is linked to the sport button, if not you get a seperate switch purely to switch the exhuast between standard and sports sound. If you get it retro fitted its quite alot cheaper if you already have sports chrono because the electrical gubbins are more or less already there. I think its £1800 otherwise but not sure.

Just wish it was fitted to mine!

I don't think Porsche had any problems with the 996 PSE. In fact, it's one of the most desirable options on the 996 - with or without the switch. Lovely sound but not particularly loud.

The PSE on the 993 suffered from resonance and drone in the mid-range, so wasn't so popular.

Don't think there is a fully resolved PSE for the Boxster or Cayman that matches the popularity of the 996 PSE.

The 987/Cayman PSE has just been launched, I think to coincide with them dropping the 3.4 engine into the Boxster S...

Hi, I currently own a Porshce Boxster 987 2.9 new generation 2010. She is beautiful but I would like a little more sound from the exhaust. I recently took mine in for a service and had a 981 with a sports switchable exhaust which sounded fantastic. Since then I've been hooked on the sound. I spoke to the dealer and they said they could fit a switchable exhaust to my car which won't quite sound the same, but will be great. The cost is 2k. What do you think?

If I compare how the PSE on my 987.2S sounded versus what a 981!sounds like driving by, I think the Porsche dealer is poorly managing your expectations. I'd say the 981 is much more tuneful with lots more popping etc. lots of people on this site have commented on how different the newest fen PSEs are.

I did like it on the 987 but I)!dont expect it to be as standout as the 981 and I I) do perhaps consider other aftermarket options

Look into Carnewal exhausts, not heard in person but there is a video on youtube or a 2.9 Cayman with one, sounds pretty good to me and would be a fraction of the cost.
