The bolts that fix the driveshaft to the diff appear to be 8mm hex socket, but a 8mm allen key seems a bit floppy, is it a torex drive that I need and if so what size.

You may find an imperial size fits better? Make sure you clean the hole out first! Many people round them..... Replacements are worthwhile if you plan to keep the car.

Take your time to release the torque, then ball ended ones make it easy. You learn to be a bit 'patient' turning the shaft - cleaning, cleaning... loosen / crack.. Once thats done the actual removal is quite quick. I think it been known for threadlock to have been used to avoid loosening (common) which will make it a bit harder, if you have been very unlucky. In that case I would advise the following greeting next time you see previous owner:

Hi,
Just picked up on this one,if you loosen or remove the bolts don't loctite and retighten.
You must replace.
Been there and done it.
It does not work and is not worth the hassle/expense or messy pants when the bolts come loose.
You must replace.
Cheers

If you have a GKN Diff and replacing bolts check the threads as they are different wheel side to diff side.Had to be the only bolt threads I didn't write down.
Also try a 5/16" drive.
