Just had my 55reg Freelander TD4 Sports Auto serviced at my local LR dealer today. Overall it costs me 602 pounds which also include a new set of front brake pads and an upper break light bulb. It was a shock for me. Coz I always thought the first service should be relatively cheaper (around 150 pounds). The upper break light costs 11 pounds, and the pads costs 125 pounds. So even without these two, the whole service still costs around 450 pounds! Is that normal for a Freelander? I used to drive a new MINI and a Samrt Fortwo. So I know the service charge in both BMW and MB. They are just normal compare to Land Rover. I'm still in shock...

That's exactly what happened to me yesterday, a phone call around 1:00pm!!! And I was even told by the dealer that MB is more expensive to buy but cheaper to service. On the other hand, LR is cheaper to buy but more expensive to service. Yes it is much more expensive to service, but not that cheaper to buy in my case. Anyway the explanation they gave me was that it took the best part of 2hr to just check 'everything' before they could start changing anything! And the labour is 85 pounds per hour. So that how they came up with more than 450 pounds for the 12k mile service, and 150 pounds for the pads (602 pounds in total)!

Small city cars will always cost less to maintain than a 4x4. I've never found LR to be any more expensive than other dealers, and that's with Range Rover labour rates.

Coincidently, quite recently my Viper SRT10 and Defender werre given their first services at 6,000 miles at their respective main dealers. Viper was £150 and the Defender £385. Prices were for labour and service items only, in other words oil and filters. Upon asking the Land Rover dealer the reason for the cost was just told 'welcome to the world of Land Rover.' Well you live and learn, will be a non franchised specialist next time, for the the Defender anyway.

Hi Guys,
It is a story I hear on a regular basis, daily in fact.
You should be aware, that despite what the main dealers would have you believe, you do not have to take your vehicle to a main dealer to maintain the warranty.
You can select a specialist in your marque of vehicle, one you can trust and one you can get a good feel for, and ensure they use genuine filters on the service, (most specialists already do this anyway), they must be a vat registered garage and you will save at least 40% on the price of your service.
Most independant specialists use the same service schedules as the main dealers and in my experience do far more than the main dealers.
Your warranty will not be effected as, (under the terms of the EEC block exemption regulations 2004), it is illegal practice to restrict customers to manufacturers dealers to maintain warranties.
You could try looking at the goodgaragescheme.com to find some well recommended garages where customers can leave feedback for the garages they have used.
One caveat however, you will still have to visit your main dealer for any warranty work, as they will have to do any repairs on behalf of the manufacturer.
Give the independants a try, you will be pleasantly surprised.
Cheers
Roy

clap excellent advice BUT.....
.....if your car has any extended warranty cover, just double check the terms as most of these are Mechanical Breakdown Insurance and they can stipulate whatever they like and get away with it - as Roy says under the new car warranty they arent legally allowed to but MBI policies can do

Interstin comments here.

When we looked at buying the run out model of the last Discovery I remember asking the service department of the dealer the service costs.

They were truly horrendous. Our Freelander that we bought a year or so later never got to the point wher it needed a service so I don't know what it would have cost.

Seems fairly indicitive of main dealer servicing in general. Before buying my Range Rover I used to run a Chrysler, the costs there were just as bad and that was for a fairly inoccuous 4 door saloon (see my profile & blog).

Independent for me from now on.

Dont think u pommys have the rip off merchants to yourselves, just recently a friend of mine had her gearbox jamb beteen gears in her 3 year old Ford Courier XLT 4X4, she was wacked 1500.00 for parts and 4,500.00 labour, I chaecked a mate who owns a trans shop and he said 2800.00 fitted for a new box, where is the justice, yes she went to the local Ford dealer who probably used his gold plated spanners`,what blatant con job. U gotta be very careful and make them break down the bill to the last dollar and u must know exactly what was and wasnt, bet they charge while it s on the hoist during smoko.
