This is why crime is falling
Discussion
My son was the victim of an attempted car jacking this afternoon in the city centre.
Parked up...one yob opened his passenger door, the other said he'd got a knife and wanted his car.
My lad was writing at the time, so probably looked quite small. He isn't.
When he sat up and told them to f**k off, they changed their minds and scarpered.
He ought to report this incident, but he won't...
Because it took six hours and two visits to the police station a while ago to report a nasty assault. The assailant was known, there were witnesses and CCTV....and no prosecution was brought.
This is why government figures show crime dropping.

I'm sorry your sun was a victim of crime I'm also sorry you cannot be bothered to report it. All I can say is that complaining about the police not doing anything about something they know nothing about is hardly fair. If your son had called as the offence happened then you may have got a different response. If people do not report crime then how are the police supposed to know there is a problem. There may be whole hosts of issues why your last incident did not go to prosecution there also may not. The offence you described is a robbery. Even if they cannot find them knowing there is a problem allows resources to be diverted to the area. Not telling or reporting it hardly solves the problem. If you don't report it what's to say nxt time someone is hurt. Its your public duty to at least try to report that crime.
For the record though a proportion of crimes have always gone unreported.
More go unreported now than did. Significantly more
Attempted break in in my garage and what happens? Sorry mate, too busy. I get a nice booklet though.
Attempted break in and smashed window in my car and what happens? Sorry mate, too busy. I get another nice booklet.
Yet there's enough police to man speed cameras. Police priorities are shot to
ing pieces.

If the OP's son is not going to report it, he cannot complain when it happens to someone else.
For all we know the Police may well know who these 2 individuals are.
How are they expected to solve crime they do not know about, or indeed argue the case for more resources?

By investigating minor crimes. However unimportant they may seem in the overall picture each and every crime, however minor to the police is a significant event in the life of the individual concerned.
If we perceive through our own experiences of the police that nothing will happen then we will lose interest in reporting events as we don't believe in the ability of the police to solve them.
We are all victims of targets. For the record the last crime that I reported which actually received ANY attention whatsoever was back in 1983.

What does the term "policing by permission" actually mean? I've heard this said about UK policing.
How does us employing a police force square with them doing things in a way that seems to be at odds with popular opinion?

Just because a particular interest group doesn't like a particular aspect of police work doesn't mean the general public aren't in favour.
We do not, and have never had, the resources to adequately investigate each and every minor crime so we prioritise, in those areas where
a. there is a realistic prospect of identifying an offender and/or
b. the crime by its nature requires an investigation.
Policing now is much smarter than it was 25 years ago and our methods of investigation have improved vastly. I can remember in those days rushing around from one minor job to the next, with not enough time to do anything effective at any of them. The public may have met a police man when they called but the reality was that it was no more likely to lead to a conviction than what happens today.
Robbery is always treated as a serious offence. That is what this thread is about. As I said before these 2 individuals may be robbery squad targets, they may be subject of bail conditions, they may have ASBOs banning them from the area. There may be any number of steps that the police could take to remove them from the streets and stop their offending. However if the incident is not reported we will never know.
I appreciate the frustration felt by the public when nothing seems to happen when they report crime and I share it. However by not reporting a serious crime the job of taking these people out is made harder, and everyone suffers as a result.
I wish I could take some of the people from this site on a visit to our robbery squad to show them how professional and determined the men amd women are to catch these people.
If they are not told about such offences their job is made harder. Well Done.

Ahhh, now I understand it perfectly. Thanks for the clarification.

There have been over SEVEN MILLION prosecutions for speeding NOT including RTA incidents since 1998.
What has that got to do with crime?
Most of those are cameras I dare say. Taking away all the speed cameras in the country will not catch one robber.

Well, if you took £50k x the number of cameras and turned that into extra beat police, and freed the Courts and CPS up to deal with the "minor offences" (minor if you see them every day, major if it happens to you), then you would catch AND PROSECUTE more robbers....
Strange that the jails are full to overflowing, Community penalties are being considered and issued more and more, police cells are filling up with those who are locked out because the jails are full.
I wonder who does the work to fill the jails?
Maybe they are full of speeders
Funny how those who like to make a point forget the reality of the bigger picture!
