I was wanting to convert my 4x4 sierra dohc into a 2.9 24v cosworth but am unsure whether i can keep the 4x4 or if i will need to ditch it in favour of Rwd.

What an odd thread.

IIRC on 4wd sierras one of the drive shafts runs through the sump. Since the v6 Cossie lump is based on the Cologne V6 (correct me if I'm wrong), could you use the sump from the XR4x4? Then add turbos .

Is the 2 litre box the same as the V6 one though? I know there are subtle differences with the rwd type-9 V6 box as compared to the normal type-9?

The 2.0 DOHC XR4x4s are all MT75 gearboxes I think. I would get the engine first and compare sumps. I agree with Matthew, I can't see why a XR4x4 2.9 sump wouldn't fit as the 24v is based on the 'Cologne' 2.9 12v. I know it has been done by several people, but that doesn't mean it is an easy job. Especially as the ECU is designed from an automatic box.

Keep us posted anyway as it is something I'm looking at doing on mine.

Sounds good. still trying to source an engine, plenty of sierra v6 but the granada seems to be few and far apart up here in the north east. i already got a sump to compare so all being well it wont be long. driving

24v granada's/scorpio's are only worth a few hundred quid, buy a whole one. You can then test the engine, hopefully get the service history, plus you'll have the loom and anything else that may come in handy, you may be able to sell the other bits and end up with the engine for free!

It might also be worth having a look at this site www.topbossperformance.co.uk/
as they have done a lot of conversions and the guy in charge runs a twin turbo rwd 24V Sierra - he might have done a 4wd one as well perhaps?

Sumps are interchangable if done correctly. Funnily enough I also produce a girdle for the 2wd & 4wd versions. I also do cast iron turbo manifolds as well as engine conversions smile As for gearboxes it's possible to fit a t5 but steer clear of adaptor plates because they're well rubbish. Try to get a second hand flowtech bellhousing or spend a bit extra and buy a new bellhousing from Burton Power.

Loads of threads on Passion Ford about this conversion.

Fairly straight foward i think,in fact the guy who bought my 4x4 off me did the conversion dont know what he did about the 4x4 bit.

Lots of people have done this conversion over on the Interford forums. I think someone called 'Madoldbugger' has done an FAQ.

2.9 XR4x4 sump is almost an exact fit onto the 24v engine, with just a small adjustment to the oil pump snorkel to clear the slightly shallower XR4x4 sump.

Good choice btw. I think a few people have done twin turbo conversions on these for mahoosive power!

This guy also did some cool stuff to the 24v engine/Sierra... an interesting read!
