I have been offered some litronics from a 2001 996 for about £400. I believe these are not the Bi-Xenon lights that came on later cars thought I'm no expert.
Are they likely to be significantly better than normal 996 lights (with Osram Slver Star bulbs) on dipped beam?

Thanks in advance

Hi andy
These came factory fitted to my boxster and really great ,The only trouble is that they come as a complete system. They are connected to height sensors fitted to the F&R track control arms and must be fitted with headlamp washers as a legal requirement. No doubt if you contact Hartec or Mike from Knutsford they will be able to advice you what is needed
cheers Bob

Yes, they will be significantly better. If not even better than that!

Hi Andy

I did a Xenon upgrade to my MK1 - bloody brilliant. Try Hids4U or alan at aceparts (here on PH) for a HID kit - took me 45 minutes to do. Costs way less than £400.

Sounds like a good deal - I can recommend the Litronics over the high definition bulbs which I found do little to improve the standard units. I bought the full Porsche retrofit kit new from carnewal in Belgium (www.carnewal.com) for about 1k. I think they are worth every penny - their performance is significantly better.

Here's a pic - note I removed the orange repeater reflector from the units for that totally clear look. Fitted them in December and they immediately proved their worth on a drive down to Geneva in poor weather conditions. Left the diffusers on for continental driving as I'm over there fairly regularly but can't be bothered to adjust them. You'll note they bring the look of the lights up to date replacing the opaque glass lens inside the unit with the Litronic lens:

No one needs to pay £400 for a kit! £125 and the results will be identical and you can have a budget holiday with the change.

I don't think so - think they kept them as an option. In fact I believe I have litronics on my GT3 RS (as standard) rather than the full bixenon units.

Alan, been considering an upgrade for standard lights on a '99 996 for a while, and with Le Mans coming up, like the offer you mention. How would I access the PH rate of £125 from your web site?

Thanks

Ross

Ditto

Sorry if this is a stupid question but does the kit give you improved dipped as well as main beam performance.

Andy

I thinks its only one or the other. My HID upgrade gives HD 'dipped beam'. Hi beam is standard. I think the dipped beam performance is an astounding improvement.

Following recommendations I placed my order with Alan yesterday.

Just hope the kit is as easy to fit as reported.

Though I didn't use alan's kit, I expect they are all similar. You may need to drill a 25mm hole in the back of the headlight assembly cap thingy - very simple. I used sticky sided velcro to fix the ballast in the cavity behind the headlights.

Whole job took about 1 hr. Make sure you get the LED side lights too.
