Cayman S Residuals
Discussion
I am a bit of a nerd when it comes to leafing through Top Marques etc (always getting grief from the gf). I always have thought the Caymans were a little overpriced and don't belive there are that many divers out there who can really appreciate the true driving experience over and above say a Boxster. I reckon they'll come down to maybe £33-35k and stay level for a wee while until the proposed facelift comes out - which correct me if I am wrong anyone but is planned for about late 2008/early 2009 - 18 months away.
Don't get me wrong I thing they're terrific cars and a steal if they came down to this price level.
Problem I have with them is ........... New Cayman S - £53-54K by the time you have put some extras on versus 1 year old 997 Carrera S with the same options. There's just not a big enough difference.

Can't see any reason why they will be worth any more than late £20's K (that is £27-29k)in that time period.
A good car, but there will be quite a few Porsches to choose from when you have <£30k to spend in a couple of years

Yup - and by then almost all of them will be out of warranty. So do you think those who compromised upon colour to keep value will see their dividend repaid?
Well having just sold mine I think I'm well placed to comment. It's an odd market and spec is key. The car has to have a selling point, and the 19" wheels appear popular.
What I can say with certainty is that the Cayman premium over the Boxster is not supported by the used market, especailly now that the Boxster S has the same 3.4 engine as the Cayman S.
I reckon in 12 months time, a nice 2006 Cayman S with say 20K on the clock will be retailing outside an OPC for c£33-35K. Bear in mind OPCs didn't have any used Cayman S under £40K only a week ago.

The problem with Porsche ownership is compression in the market, ie the model above being close to your cars value, and yours needing to have something extra at resale time.
The Cayman S I had from Reading for 2 days was fab, but having made the leap to a 911, for me the engine in the Cayman is 2' too far forward, and that is the same for a lot of buyers. At the end of the day its a serial production car, and in % terms I see no reason that it will be any different to Boxster values. IMHO, the only cars that are going to hang onto a chunk of value are the GTs and TTs

As above, it'd be hard to spend £45k on a used Cayman when a 996TT could be had for the same money.
At £27 - 29k it'd be a different story though.

Well, that depends if you want a Cayman or a 996tt.
Given the choice, I would and did take the Cayman. Why? Because I wanted a new car, with lower miles, more warrenty, nicer interior, lower running costs, longer service intervals and less potential hassle. The fact that more of it's potential performance is usable more of the time is just an added bonus

A ridiculous comment to be fair..more useable performance than a 996tt ...sorry no.You should have bought a Subaru that would offer everything you want.I know of no situation where a Cayman can outperform a 996tt(other than fuel consumption) and to even be mentioned in the same sentence as a tt is laughable. Subaru? he said nice interior! and interior is nicer than 996 too IMHO
some people just want a new car rather than used, and they realise they will get a les cpable car because of it. That said Cayman S is a lovely car but £5k overpriced when compared to a 3.4S Boxster IMO - I just don't buy the Porsche pricing policy and that the Cayman is a demonstrably better car than a Boxster.

The point I was making was that in a Cayman S you can get closer to it's limits every day than you could in a tt. We all know that getting close to the limits of any car is where all the fun is to be had, not in punting around at 3/10ths of a cars potential.
As for the Boxster/Cayman "makes no sense with the same engine/4K cheeper" issue, well if the Boxster had a 3.6 I'd (probably, no Fk it, I would) choose the Cayman. I really really really don't want a drop-top. I live in Manchester!!!
