Gracefull halt

Came to a gracefull stop today, luckily only 200 yds from home. Got a good spark from the coil lead against the plenum so I'm thinking it's fuel pump related. It started briefly 20 mins later, run rough for 30 secs, then died as I went to raise the revs. If the pump was in the throes of passing on could it be struggling to deliver the required pressure? I can hear it buzzing away after the engine stops.

Spark from the plug leads or just the king lead? Could be distributor cap issues.

On the hotwire cars you can hear the pump running as you switch on, on yours I think you need to move the AFM vane to get the pump running?

The symptoms sound like a classic fuel pump relay problem, they tend to be OK cold and then go a bit iffy when they have had half an hour to heat up. It could also be a heat related ignition fault, but you could diagnose that easily by checking the spark.

Are the relays interchangable? could I swap a relay from something else to test?

Got a good spark at the plug and the fuel pump fuse is fine.

I have swapped relays in the past although you have to check the legend on them to make sure they are the same.

check the earths to the engine block and ecu

I don't suppose the fuel gauge is playing up and showing fuel available when in fact it's all used up? It's a very easy and cheap thing to eliminate.

Mine behaved like that when the dreaded coolant temperature sensor was not ok, and made ECU in overfueling the engine massively. You can test by shorting the leads to this sensor (ECU thinks engine is hot). If everything fine then, replace sensor and your back to normal.

Fix'd it

Found a couple of breaks in the wiring that goes to the pump. Looked a bit corroded and dirty too so it must have ocurred a while back and go gradually worst.
