Hello All,
I am looking in purchasing one of these 2nd hand & am being offered 2 color possibilities:
*Basalt Black.
*Solid Black.

Does anyone have any experience of these 2 colors?
Is there *really* a big difference?
Does it make a difference when reselling the car?

Any other comments?

Txs in advance,
Eric.

Basalt black is like 95% black and metallic. The other one is flat and solid 100% black. I prefer the metallic one, but each to their own.

I also like seal grey cos I'm lazy. Speed yellow is great too, although would everyone question your taste? Cool bright shade tho.

Apparently, although I'm not sure it's true (but was told by OPC), the metallic basalt black stands up better to stone chips than the solid black.

The confugurator won't help....The difference is all down to the sunlight and the curves of the car.
On dull overcast day you will be hard pressed to tell the difference between gloss black and metallic.
However on a sunny day the basalt black has a slight amethyst tinge to it.
A good friend has shown me this on a basalt 996,his previous 1999 metallic black 996 had a definite bronze tinge on a bright day..he ordered whatever metallic black was stock at the time.
I have seen a gloss black 996,basalt black and millenium edition met black which goes dark violetish...park these all together and it is amazing about the difference..........I would personally go for metallic over gloss.

My 2000 model 996 was in metallic black (basalt ??). Go to my profile, there's a photo of it if you click on the link for the car. Taken on a sunny day, you get to see the subltle difference in colour in bright conditions, on the front PU especially. It was much more like a VERY dark grey than absolute black.

IMO, much nicer than solid black.

all, txs for the infos.
i found a nice 2nd hand Box S in solid black..

I was keener on basalt black initialy, but the car i found has the proper specs, mileage & price.

I have seen pictures of the car in solid black.

I suppose i will get used to it.

I wanted a Black car anyway.

I will let you know my feelings when i have the car.

Boxster S in Solid Black with the sport-design wheels should not be too bad, should it?
Eric.

Hmmm, a dealer said that. Didn't metallic paint cost more than solid colours, so more profit for them? There may be some truth in it, since metallic finishes have a hard lacquer on the top and solid colours don't (usually).

My 993 is metallic black and has plenty of stone chips, which show up against the white primer underneath. It does look stunning when it is clean, but doesn't stay clean very long.

There is a theoretical advantage with a solid colour actually, as it is very much easier to colour match if you even needed to spray a section of a panel.

I'm intending to get one of these franchised chip painters in at some point, to have a go at mine, so if anyone knows of any good ones in Berks/Hants/Wilts area, I'd be interested to hear.

ahuum, I hear that Silver is the new Black this year

I was going to go for black and had the same probs, wheni went and saw lots of black cars, I changed my mind and went for silver.

Black looks fab when its clean but I have had my heart broken on a previous black (solid) car when it gets stone chips and minor scratches. I used to wash and polish ever night. Sad but true.

So i could not bear the heart ache of another black car again.
