The cost of the service is really dependant on a number of factors:-
i) The quoted rate for the service
ii) the hourly rate / quote for the tappets
iii) what else needs doing (and the hourly rate, experience, honesty and skill of the garage)

You are better off choosing the garage on reputation, locality, 'personality' etc before you worry about the quotes. most will quote a similiar price for a 12K service.

Can you give me a rough idea? going to try and get the owner to pay as i think the car is a little overpriced and it gives me more room to haggle, its 97 reg 59k at 13750,4.2, and it needs a 12k service.

A standard 12k service with tappets is quoted at most Indies at approx £600.00, but I would guess the seller has already taken that into account with his pricing of the car.

Do you think a 97, 4.2 with 59k is worth 13750? does this sound ok?

CerbieLee - f you spend £13750 on something normal like a Honda Civic type 'R', you can almost guarantee that it will cost you £300 (or whatever a service costs) over the next 12 months.Butt this is Cerbera world. I bought a good Cerb last year and in 12 months I've spent about £4k on it I sold my last Cerb to Byker28i, and in 12 months it has cost him only £370 on a service! Who can tell, if you want one,
just buy it and enjoy it. if it has been well looked after then it is worth the price.

Ah yes - I remember the mundane pre Cerb days well. What a dull life I led

Big difference from the above though - Firstly I knew it had to be a Cerb, secondly price didnt matter. I was more concerned in finding the best one I could afford. What it was worth didnt matter. Still doesnt.

Lee, you're more likely to be looking at £1k for a 12K service including tappets. Check out TVR Power's site.

:shameless advertising on: P.s. You can buy my old one with a full engine rebuild complete with 12 month guarantee for less than that :shameless advertising off:

Austec's website quotes £560 plus VAT for a 12k service and £100 plus VAT for the tappets. Of course, its rare that you end up with 'just' the service items, so allow £1k Id say

Can anyone tell me why servicing is so much, what are they doing thats so special.
As motor vehicle tech with a franchise dealer, Tvr's look like a hark back to the days of yesteryear when any ordinary sunday nmesser could would and did fix/service their own car. Modern cars are far more complicated, require more time work in a sevice. So why £600 and what on earth is the grand for? As far the diagnostics go, more often than not the error codes simply deleted, take it for test dive, recheck codes & 99 out of 100 all clear.
TVR's just georgous grown up go karts on steroids (cut wih crack) Big engine on frame with wheels. Not Apollo 13.

At these prices think I'll service it myself and sod the history (probably keep it foever anyway)
Plus its anther good way of getting to know your car Intimately

p.s could be wrong as I've not owned mine a week yet? rained everyday, drove it anyway. That'l keep you fit.
Doing more catching than Pakitani cricketer playing Engand.

There's not that many people servicing them, so you're slightly limited as to how many places you can go to / have access to parts.

With vat, you're looking at between £40 & £75 an hour.

If you want to do it on the cheap, you could always drop it in to "Charlie Browns" & let some 17 year old kid rev the nuts off it for five hours.

My dad's old XJS recently spent a day at Jaguar at £100 per hour, by the end of the day, they were coming very close to the cost of the vehicle.

I've no doubt the guy who services my Missus's Metro could service the Cerb, but I'd rather pay the extra & let someone who works on them all the time, look after it.
