There was once a time, back on the BBC, I would watch every race live. However, over the years since ITV and those bloody ad breaks have been part of F1 racing I have tended to record so that I can fast forward the ads.

However, I have noticed recently that I have started to fast forward in the races too. In fact I timed how long I was watching yesterdays Spanish GP and it was a mere 20mins!!! Does this not say something for the poor quality of racing?

Don't forget, some of that 20mins was taken up with stopping and rewinding to catch something I might have missed (no much though!!).

I was wondering who else records the races now instead of watching live, because I bet the advertisiers and sponsors would get a bit pissed off if they were not getting their logos/brand messages across to the 'fast forward' audience...

All it says is that you don't find it interesting enough to watch it through. The only bits I fast-forward are the adverts.

This season has been relatively interesting so far. OK, yesterday was dull but Barcelona always is and will remain so until the emphasis is back on mechanical, not aero grip.

Always live, but I guess mainly out of tradition than anything else. Live grand prix are a bit of a "drop everything" event in my family and circle of friends ..... much like a "falling over contest" match is to others.

The ad breaks are f@#king annoying though I agree. I fear that it is something we will have to live with, however, and the BBC are unlikely to line Bernies pockets with enough gold to ever get it back.

I'm the opposite.

I started recording the BBC highlights programmes back in 1983 (and I still have most of the GPs from 1983 up until about 2003 on VHS tape). Originally, BBC mainly showed the GPs in highlight form only with only about four GPs shown live each season (Monaco, Britain, Germany and Italy being the usual candidates for live coverage).

Because the races were getting extremely tedious by the early 2000s, I decided to give up taping the highlight programmes as there were precious few highlights to view. Another factor is the lateness of ITV's highlight programme compared to what the BBC used to do. ITV often start their highlights close to midnight. BBC's were usually between 9.30 and 10.30 in the evening.
I therefore tend to watch them live now and not bother staying up late to watch ITV's highlights.

Yesterday, I amused myself during the ad-breaks by watching the 1984 San Marino GP.
I have to say, the 1984 cars looked AWFULLY slow - and sounded pretty dull too (until Derek Warwick's Renault suffered a cracked exhaust).

Relative to what? watching paint dry??

All four races have been dull so far this season, apart from the first few laps, after which the race is finished, oh unless you mean those edge of the seat overtaking moments in the pits - WOW fantastic racing...

I love F1, but my passion is being eroded away, especially if you watch other racing. I caught the BTCC the other day by chance, thanks to ITV moving it from one channel to another - probably because they don't want viewers to see what real racing is about and upset those who go to so much trouble to keep F1 on ITV1.

It was one of the races at Thruxton, 5 cars side-by-side heading into a corner, expecting total carnage but they all managed to get through just about in one piece. No this was not on the first lap, this was half-way through the race. OK so they may use reverse grids, and success ballast - but its bloody good racing both for those who enjoy to watch live at the track or those who managed to catch it on TV.

F1 needs to wake up bloody fast because it is becoming very VERY DULL

yes I was at Thruxton for the BTCC weekend

F1 - more interesting compared to previous recent years. Not 1 team completely dominant, more overtaking on track than I remember from last year. If they can move away from the reliance on aerodynamics (as I think they are trying to do next year) then it should be OK.

However, like the Top Gear/5th gear debates - if you don't find it interesting or entertaining, why are you watching it? If watching paint dry is more interesting for you, why don't you spend a couple of Sunday hours doing that instead? Seriously - I find football uninteresting, so I don't watch it. I don't start threads in the Sports forum complaining about it being dull.

ewenm I feel passionate about F1, so much so that it frustrates me that they all seem soo bloody blinkered to what the fans have been asking for years - more closer racing, banning of all these silly winglets, ban refueling, and bring back big fat slicks.

Technology is a wonderful thing that I'm interested in as an engineer, but the balance has gone far too far in favour of technology over the actual racing. When ever these threads appear, almost everyone agrees that the on-track racing is poor - why don't these $million team owners, engineers and designers, along with input from the drivers put forward a blue print for a total change of direction back to the drivers and mechanical grip as apposed to all the aero and eletrical dependance.

There also needs to be a little more danger (awaiting flames on that comment!!!!) put back into the racing too...

You answered that yourself with this comment above F1 racing can not compare with that race at Thruxton can it?

The argument is that F1 is supposed to be the pinnacle of motorsport - so has all the latest technology etc etc. It is not intended to show the best racing and I think they will struggle to create the close racing we see at the BTCC and others while still maintaining their "pinnacle of motorsport" tag.

The racing I'm most looking forward to seeing this year is the Historic GTs at Silverstone on August 11th - seeing those 60s and 70s cars sliding around next to each other will be great racing but, unfotunately for racing enthusiasts, that's not what F1 is about. I don't think F1 has a problem attracting fans - Barcelona was a sell out yesterday I think. I'm going to Spa for the F1 in September so will be able to form a better opinion of it then having finally made it to a live race.

I would argue that F1 should be the pinnacle of 'motor racing' which takes a slightly different angle to the way you view the 'industry' because it is not a sport really, but that's another story

As for the sell out, that was down to one man, and we don't mean Bernie this time! Alonso fever means that race was a sell-out and I bet many of them went home yesterday a little pissed off due to a lack or racing from their guy.

Look how support in Germany has gone down hill since MS was winning everything - that shows that even the fans in Germany want real racing too, even if their man was winning.

Original GT40: Your posts/threads are getting VERY boring.

Please give it a rest: if you don't like F1, stop watching it. If you don't like Button, fine. But PLEASE stop going on about it.

F1 live?!
Now that would be nice, down here we get a delayed telecast several hours later. (after several hours of big brother rolleyes ) Makes the idea of running live timing alongside the TV impossible.

If you don'thave anything constructive to add to the melting pot of discussion, then don't bother reading. There are plenty who either agree or disagree and each add their valued comments!

IIRC I have never been too critical of Button.

...and when there is a fantastic race I will be the first to applaude the guys, still waiting though...

I have been quite vociferous in my condemnation of modern F1 for quite a while. However, despite all my moaning in the past, I really do feel that this year things have been a whole order of magnitude better than the past four or five seasons.

I just hope that it stays this way.

agreed. its getting very boring. we already get the point that OGT40 doesn't like F1 anymore, so stop bloody complaining on here about it because we already know!

Really?

I have a huge collection of F1 scale models (100's) I have some fantastic F1 memorabilia, including a Senna crash helmet, I get autosport every week, F1 Racing every month and watch F1 either race side (silverstone) or on the box (albeit fast forwarding all the crap at present) so to say I hate F1 is far from the mark.

I am simply questioning the direction is has been going. There is nothing wrong in asking questions is there? After all, there seems to be an article in aforementioned publications every month about the very same subject so I can't be that far from the truth...

Can we just keep it to one thread and add to that after each GP rather than starting new ones each time? It's getting repetitive:
1.GP weekend comes around
2.We watch the GP
3.Some think there's not enough overtaking or close racing
4.Some come on here and start a thread to complain about it
5.Others defend F1 as more than just an on-track competition
6.We each have our own ideas about how to "solve" it (if it even needs "solving"
7.Thread dies for a couple of weeks
8.Return to 1.

Maybe a sticky thread titled "How I'd change F1..."

Back on topic......

Definitely wrth watching it live so you can have the live timing screen on the computer from Bernie's official website, which gives an additional dimension to the race. You see a lot of what Ross Brawn mentioned recently that was lacking in the TV commentary and the lack of information they portrayed to the viewer, ie split times, gaps, who's currently fast / slow etc etc. It also means you can pretty much follow the race during the ad breaks.
