Emerald Wasted Spark - Air Temp Sensor
Discussion
Thanks Gents ....
The intention is to tap in a Air Temp Sensor in to an ally pipe extension that will sit where the aor flow meter sits currently.
I need to fill the gap anyway, and I can get a nice piece of ally tube which will take a boss for the air temp sensor.
By putting it over here rather than in to the plenum I believe I'll avoid some fo the heat soak issues associated with plenum mounting the sensor. I can add additional heat protection to make sure the reading is more accurate a well ..

Assuming you use an open bulb sensor, I wouldn't expect you to have any particular problems from heat soak. I haven't noticed any, and on mine the sensor is screwed straight into the manifold a couple of inches away from the heads.

Cheers Pete, where have you sourced the correct type of sensor from ?

the air rushing past will give an artificially low reading
How so?

"On a windy winter day, the engine block on your vehicle will cool more quickly
too, but it will never drop below the ambient air temperature."
Therefore the more air rushing past = the more accurate reading of the air temp .....

basically it gets wetted with fuel so the fuel evaporating off it artificially chills the sensor
so keep it away from the trumpet air-stream and you'll be OK
Matt
Are you sure that it does ot simply cool the sensor more efficeintly to ambient air temperature?

I can see how that could occur at idle, but shirley under power you wouldn't expect to get enough stand-off to matter?

But the point is - you are more likely to have over heating issues at idea (in traffic) and if the reading is low - the the ecu will not compensate for this.

Going back to this earlier post, are we now saying this is to far away from the point of entry.
I am sympathetic to the argument that is should be as close as possible, however, by having the sensor in the induction it is less vulnerable to heat soak, gets an accurate reading to the temp of inducted air and how much is the air likely to be heated from this position going in to the engine.
Given the volume of air entering the engine my perception is that to heat moving air significantly enough to affect the difference between temp sensor reading and actual air temp in to engine would not be such a huge issue.
