Speeding Montoya loses licence

Montoya told police he was used to driving fast

Formula One driver Juan Pablo Montoya has had his licence confiscated for speeding in the south of France.

Police said on Monday that the 27-year-old Colombian had been clocked on Sunday driving a BMW four-wheel-drive at 204 km/h (122 mph) in a 130 km/h (78mph) zone.

Police motorcyclists caught up with him and fined him 1,000 euros (£660) on the spot.

The offence will not affect his world championship campaign, on behalf of the Williams team, as a regular driving licence is not needed to drive a Formula One car.

The Nice Matin newspaper said he had not hesitated to admit speeding, but had told police he was well used to driving fast.

The French police do not have the right to confiscate a drivers licence unless it is a French issued licence. I very much doubt Montoya's licence was french. In which case he'll just have to order a duplicate from his issuing authority. Perhaps the title of this thread should read "French Plod steal Montoya's Licence".

Currently foreign police cannot put points on our British licences. However eurocrats are currently working at taking away the fun opportunitites this affords us Brits when in europe.

Humbug....Scum....Bloodpressure.....Day Return ticket to Brussels......shotgun.....

I assume he has had his Columbian-issued International Driving permit confiscated.

Good job they didn't catch me on the way to Folembray then, I didn't go under 120mph for over 90 kilometers and managed to hit 170mph at some points...

Jenson Button got caught at 155mph last year, got a way heftier fine but he didn't get banned.

Well, at least he can now claim to have driven a fast car this season!

I wonder what a Colombian driving test involves? Terms like "white lines" could be confusing

I wonder if the Gendarme put on a tired expression and said, "Bonjour, Monsieur Schumacher"

I seem to remember an amusing Urban Myth along these lines. The names vary but the version I heard was:

Sports car stopped doing ???mph by the Police.
Traffic cop motions driver to lower the window and says
"Who the hell do you think you are? Nigel Mansell?"

Quiet, soft spoken voice comes back
"No. My name is Ayrton Senna".

(Made me laugh anyway)

I not sure that story about Ayrton is an urban myth - he was stopped in 1991 after being stopped after doing (i think) 112mph on a dual carrigeway on the morning of the British GP.

It was reported in all the motorsport press (I remember reading about it in Autosport) and apparently he was not amused at being called Nigel Mansell...

Perhaps. But last time I recounted the story on PistonHeads I was told by some of our older members that the story was originally attributed to Jim Clark and therefore I was perpetrating an Urban Myth.

Seems like I can't win at the moment.

Ayrton Senna was banned from driving for 28 days after being caught speeding on the M25 at 121 mph in a Porsche. This was in 1992.

I can remember it being on the news....showing my age now
