PCSO's Trained before BiB
Discussion
It appears that my old Force has now committed all of its training resources to training its recent intake of PCSO's at the expence of Police Officer recruits.
As a result, it has had to postpone the appointment of successful police candidates until resouces are freed up again.
It also appears that the Force is losing so many officers between 2 and 10 yrs service that the Force is going to be undermanned by up to 100 officers. Most of whom are responsible for policing the Force's capital city.
It's response to this? To transfer experienced officers, who live in the city but work elsewhere, to the city's District and backfill the resulting shortfall with lesser experienced officers.
Crisis Management at its best.
Anyone else spot the "Writing on the wall" for policing in the 21st Century? If so, do us all a favour and tell the powers to be, and quickly, before Policing has been totally dismantled by those in government with a hidden aganda.

I personally think that policing was at its best just prior to Blair coming to power.
There was more police visible and many more ploicing our roads and motorways.
Blair has changed all this and now we see more and more PCSO's and hardly any traffic police.
All this at the same time as he has let in an influx of eastern european immigrants which I persume generate another potential problem area.
I cant personnally think of anything that Blair has got right.
The only positive point being that interest rates (until recently) have kept low but thats the bank of englands responsibility.
I will be glad to see him go.
What we need is more traffic police, less target measurement and hence less "cover my arse" filling in of forms and a return to common sense law enforcement.

Personally I think Policing has been deteriorating since beat bobbies were de-emphasised. The Police seem detached from the community these days, and that happened a long time before Bliar. He just made it worse.

My understanding is that recruitment of PCSO numbers won't be increasing (the extra money that was made available for them has been used & safer neighbourhood quotas have been filled. The big push is for 'Specials' now.

Safer neighbourhood teams are supposed to address that.

Full Time Police Officers cost money and have full powers in respect of all offences - Special Constables are unpaid volunteers but have all of the powers of their full time police colleagues - PCSO's have virtually no powers and are paid 1/2 to 2/3 the going rate for a Police Constable.
So why is the government spending money on recruiting (by comparison to Specials) very expensive lame ducks.
Yes they are full time (presumably) and regular attendees (presumably) but £ for £ the Special Constable gives better value for money. We used to call the Specials Hobby-Bobbies but they compare quite favourably to the new breed of NoBobby-Bobbies.
I wonder how long it will be before the government Think-Tank comes up with a "Policing Merit Badge" for the Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts or Girl Guides.
1. They'd have to patrol our streets for a whole 24 hr period spread over a week, arrest a person for any offence except a serious one as defined by level of punishment.
2. They'd have to man a Safety Camera Parnership Van during peak times, usually nice sunny days when most motorists venture out for a bit of quality time.
3. They would be granted an exemption from prosecution by Speeding Camera whilst working towards their Merit Badge, and where age prohibits driving the exemption applies to their nominated driver.
4. They must spend not less than 85% of their time indoors writing reports and case papers for the less serious offences that they have dealt with during their patrols.
5. Under no circumstances can they think for themselves, dislpay initiative or question their role in Society, that is the responsibility of their Government.
6. The Merit Badge is not transferable.

I am aware that a number of officers in CoLP are being distracted from their normal policing duties by the need to take PCSOs under their wing - Streaky As a result, it has had to postpone the appointment of successful police candidates until resouces are freed up again.

We are recruiting semi-literate women (mostly).
Some probationers have to take witnesses to a police staion as they cannot write a statement, but can only type one on a keyboard.
One probationer I know of 'does not do violence' so is excused from arresting people. I kid you not.

I really wish you were joking but I suspect you're not.
We saw the future of British policing on TV last night, vast numbers of CCTV systems. Plod is on the way out, all we need according to the senior chaps is more cameras and a few helicopters with the odd fast response team around the town centres.
We've already got it in some parts of the country.....can't remember the last time I saw a plod car patrolling.
