I was thinking - whilst bored at work..

What car can you get that keeps daily practicality but joins it with ultimate performance.... Say you had a budget of £10k, £15k absolute tops.

I know alot of R33 Skylines can be made 400hp easy - 500hp is in reach.

How about a Audi S2 or RS2 with some fettling ?

E36 M3 with a supercharger ?

Anyone done anything similar and still drive it every day ?

A Guy I used to work with used to run an RS4 with IIRC 489bhp at the wheels (0-60 was timed at 3.9s again IIRC).

He then traded that in against an RS6 which was running 600+ bhp again using it as an everyday car. The only problem he had was that it was on 20" wheels and used to eat tyres so he swapped them for some 19" wheels and it stopped munching them quite as quickly

I've always thought the easiest way to get big power is to start with a car with a big engine.

So anything with a decent V8 is a good platform.

V8 Discovery . . . with a huge stack supercharger and a big carb sticking out the bonnet, lowered with a c cut chassis... wont handle but it would be big and fast

Don't know about 'ultimate' performance, but if I needed a fast, ultimately practical daily car, I'd plump for a Volvo 850 T5 with a RICA remap - 300bhp. Lots more is possible with further mods I believe. Plus I'd have to debadge it, put some black steelies on it and secure a couple of stuffed hounds in the rear-facing fold-up boot seats before flooring it everywhere.

You could try driving one before writing it off as being gutless.

What do you class as "ultimate performance" though - 0-100 in under 10 seconds? 9 seconds? 165 max? 175 max? Must it have 4 doors? How "practical"?

Heheh... I think I've just talked myself into getting one!

Best part of it is, you'd be spending 3 grand tops for reliable 'don't-give-a-crap' hoonage.

I think I'd have to stick some stickers on the back window 'I slow down for horses', 'BRAKE', 'Caravan Club Gala 2007' and 'Dogs are for life, not just for Christmas'. That would complete the look, along with an unhealthy amount of tartan.

ultimate as in more than you need for daily use e.g. a 400hp mid sized coupe, 600hp estate...1000hp yank tank you get the idea

practical - drive it to work, fix it, take the the supermarket - etc

Always loved the idea of the Subaru Forester.

I'd take one in fetching two tone green and black. Roof rack, Orange door bumper/reflector things, towbar, seat covers and dog guard.

Finished off with lots of Impreza STI running gear and rally car engine. With anti lag.

Can I revive this thread?? I've got 10k ish to spend looking for a car that I can use everyday but with more power than I'll ever need! I'm a power crazy nut and yet someone pointed out recently (to my disgust) that with my R32 golf, 944 turbo (s), E36 M3 history I've never yet had a car with over 300hp!!! 300! That pathetic!!

Must be a hard top, must be reliable other than that the faster the better!

So I've been thinking...

TVR (no I will be fired when I never make it to work)
Impreza (see above)
BMW (too dull not enough power)

Really its got to be a well tuned turbo then.. so what? Audi S4 2.7?? Will it be fast enough? It really needs 400+ I feel.

Do I have a hope in hell? Thoughts welcomed.

Regards,

Ben

thing is, most turbo stuff you need to spend money on to get the real power. big money.

so actually, your looking at a 5k turbo car and 5k of mods.

if you want the kind of power not fit for british roads, what about yank tanks? what are the supercharged Mustang Cobras (2003) coming down to nowadays? 390bhp before the pulley upgrade hehe

or a Camaro Z28 with intake, headers, catback, cams....400rwhp no probs if done well.
