Hi guys,

Hello all, been toying with the idea for a while now of purchasing a TVR.
I have about 15-20k to work with not sure whats best though.
Its a toss up of one of the below:

TVR Cerbera 4.0/4.2/4.5
TVR Tamora
TVR T350
TVR Tuscan S

Im ideally looking to know which is the quickest ideally 0-100 and top speed and also if there are any things i need to be careful about when looking for one.

The main points im worrying about is the engine rebuilds, un reliability issues and build quality

I would appreciate your advice and hope to get this sorted every soon.

Thanks Gareth

Gareth, get an EVO, and have a look in the knowledge. Cerbs tend to have a high running cost, but good ones tend to be pretty good from what I've seen.
The other speed six engines... mixed bag. If it's good, it's good. If it's a lemon... well, you get the idea.

Buying TVR's is all about the condition - if it's been looked after, and had money spent on it, it's worth a look.

I suggest you have a read of this thread, quite a lot of good info. (and the usual biased opinions )

www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&t=391095

Choosing your TVR on performance issues alone is not the best way to go, unless you're only buying it so you can outpose your mates in the pub. drink

Thought about this but decided against one mainly due to looks and the age v price etc.

Why do you say that ? Nice car still

Thanks

Fair enough if the looks aren't for you; I too am not wholly sure about the looks of some cars that many folk consider to be the Muts Nuts.

I say it because a 5 litre is a very quick car up to 100 mph, keeps it's value well and so many people I've known to have moved on to later TVR's after having owned a Griff only to find themselves coming back again. Seems to be something deep rooted; something you can't shake off. There's little bearing the same badge that really interests me but then we're all different. . . thank goodness!

StuB has been trying to get me to buy a ZM Roadster for over a year now ... and I am tempted ... great engine, 176 top end .... BUT .... at first glance they could easily be mistaken for a Z3, of which there are shed loads about, so not much exclusivity factor ... and they are still depreciating.

The Griff 500 is 4.1 secs to 60 and 10.5 secs to 100 ... quick enough?

Nice one here bit too much though i think.

Is 2001 MY the last ones made then ?

Which years did they change the car ? Any changes i need to be aware of ?

I want to buy the latest one i can really.

Bit worried about the engines having to be rebuilt every few years!!

Still fancy a cerbera 4.5!!

ZM roadster :- its a hairdryer with attitude! hehe
The M Coupe is the only one to buy. Exclusive, slow depreciation & wicked fun to drive!

you shouldn't need to worry about engine rebuilds with Cerbera's, the AJP8 is quite a strong unit usually, and speed 6's by the majority are pretty much all sorted now too. it was really only the early Tuscan's that suffered engine problems, but the factory sorted most of them out, plus TVR was confident the problems had been dealt with on the later cars by slapping a 3 year warranty on them!
if i were you i'd be sorely tempted by a Cerb or a T350 too, but in all honesty i think the wisest route to go down for a first time buyer is with one of these, www.pistonheads.com/sales/136367.htm
a nice Chim would provide a great introduction to the marque, this particular one has what is generally regarded as the best all round engine choice (450 RV8's still no slouch at all, and should easily fulfill all your performance needs!) it also has some nice upgrades too (leven goodies!) buy a good one, run it for a few years and then look into getting a Cerb or Tuscan.
the important thing is to use it regularly. i think it is true, the more you use a car the more reliable it will be, a car thats left sitting in a garage for some time has more time to seize up and develop problems. go out, find a good one, use it and enjoy it! thumbup

Buy a late Chim 500 with lowish miles and it is by far the cheapest, latest, safest (running cost) ,option . 14-15k should buy you a minter !. 98/99 maybe 2000. Oh and if you are half decent with a spanner you can do the work yourself. Oh and there pretty quick, if you are worried about that best you go and find out and take one for a spin. If you want to make it quicker many mod are widely available .

I could use it for work every day if i wanted to, but wasnt planning on it every day.

Still really worried about the engine rebuilds! Are they a must that they must be done?

Most cars ive seen advertised state no engine rebuild or new gearbox at 30k miles.

Im use to reliable BMWs and Mercs so not sure regarding this at all.......

Cerbera has always been my favourite to be honest in 4.5 format.
