I looked on the Rochford site and have found Team dynamics Prorace 1.2 Hyper silver alloys that look very similar to the SP wheels, although they only do them in 17"s all round. They are 4x108 et 38, 7x17. Cost £655 inc tyres. Does that sound about right?
This is them although these are 5 studs, they also do 4 studs.

www.alloywheels.com/product.asp?P_ID=1184&V_ID=25534&strPageHistory=search&strKeywords=4x108%20et35,4x108%20et37,4x108%20et38,4x108%20et40,4x108%20et42,4x108%20et45&numPageStartPosition=28&strSearchCriteria=any&PT_ID=129&Make=TVR&Model=Chimaera%204.0%20V8&strSize=17"&searchSize=17"&strSort=Low

They also do these that look nice as well:

www.alloywheels.com/product.asp?P_ID=1279&V_ID=26324&strPageHistory=search&strKeywords=4x108%20et35,4x108%20et37,4x108%20et38,4x108%20et40,4x108%20et42,4x108%20et45&numPageStartPosition=1&strSearchCriteria=any&PT_ID=137&Make=TVR&Model=Chimaera%204.0%20V8&strSize=17"&searchSize=17"&strSort=Low

They offer 205/40/17 tyres all round or you can upgrade. What size front and rear does anyone suggest or have tried and found works? I was thinking Front 215/40/17 and Rear 235/40/17 OR 215/45/17 all round. I have read that the fronts rub against the battery box if too big, how big is too big?

Lastly, what does anyone think of the differences between High performance tyres(brand unknown) or Avons or Toyo T1-R's. I'm not going to track the car but use it for everyday driving and weekend Hooooons!!
Any advice would be great!
Cheers,
Mike

I have these exact wheels with 205/40ZR17s on the front and 225/45ZR17s on the back - Toyo T1-Rs.

I recently got a set of pro race 1.2 17x7.5 fronts and 17x8 rears. After checking around various wheel dealers got them via Halfords as they had the best price by a long way. It was a bit of a challenge because their computer ordering system is designed for wheel tyre packages but once we cracked that one I saved more than £400 on the set over the worst quote elsewhere.

In my experience “ track day” tyres like the A048 or the R888 offer a massive amount more dry grip than standard road rubber, last no time at all and are scary in the wet.

Thanks guys.
Zumbruck did you use the 205/40 fronts rather than 215/40 because of the fear of rubbing. How do you find this set up?
Steve v8s did you choose 17x7.5 and 17x8 for any particular reason rather than 17x7 all round. It seems to be a bit of a minefield what size and profile to buy. Can you tell me what Halfords wheels and tyres cost, did they provide Toyos or cheaper tyres? Thanks.

Firstly I am running a Griff so the clearance may be different but I suspect not.

I would have ideally preferred 8.5 rears as that is the optimum width for the 245 tyres I am running. Unfortunately the Pro Race is not made in 8.5 inch 9 inch ones would have probably been better but I was worried about clearance, having fitted the 8s it looks as if 9s would fit fine and is what I would get if ordering again. I got the 7.5 fronts as that was shown as optimum for the 225 rubber I am using.

I think really you first need to decide what tyres you are going to fit, check with the manufacturer what the optimum and permitted rim sizes are and then find some rims to suit.

I got just the rims from Halfords and bought the rubber elsewhere, they averaged around £100 each. The 8s were more than the 7.5 and I guess if you go for skinny 7s they would be cheaper still.

This has been discussed before, at length, but the standard 7.5 rear is not really ideal for 245 rubber. Don’t know what the optimum size is for a 235 but would guess at 8 inch or 7.5 at a push 7 sounds a bit narrow for the optimum footprint to me.

I must admit I took the cowards way out and consulted my fettler, who has done this conversion several times. Those were the sizes he recommended. I wanted to know it was all going to fit and not rub on anything.

I've only done one sprint on them so far, and I was being careful (too careful, I think) because of various warnings about the release compound on new Toyos (I didn't have time to wear them in...), but the initial impression I gained was that there's a lot more grip than the SO3PPs they replaced, and that when they let go, it's a lot more progressive - on the SO3's it was always a case of "Am I going too fast? - Oops I'm facing backwards" whereas the Toyos seemed to give a lot more warning that they were at the limit of grip. One of the other sprinters who's been using them for a while has said the same thing. I would say that I make no pretence at being an expert, though!

As for appearance, I think they look a lot better than the Estorils they replaced, and overall I'm quite pleased with them. I think I could have gone wider, but I'd have been worried about them rubbing. The ride quality is unchanged - although I already have Nitrons, uprated springs & front ARB and SH drop links, so it was nothing to write home about...

The car's back at the fettler at the moment but as soon as it re-appears, I can take some photos to post, if you wish.

My car is a Grif not, a Chim, but I've fitted the Pro Race 1.2 as follows ..

7X17 PRO RACE 1.2 WHEEL 4X108 PCD ET25 IN ANTHRACITE 174108
PRO RACE 1.2 8 X18 WHEEL 4X108 PCD ET35 IN ANTHRACITE 184108
215/40ZR17 TOYO PROXES T1-R 87W
245/35ZR18 TOYO PROXES-T1R

Total £827.80 from Demon Tweeks - tyres fitted and balanced, I thought that was a good deal!

I seem to be getting a clearer picture of what I need.

Scoule,
Are you sure the et 25 for the 7x17 is correct. I was advised by Rochford tyres that the et is 38. I'm still baffled as to what is going to fit.
If i can find the correct ofsets for the 7x17 fronts then I could be ready to buy.
So far I have two options.
1. 17" & 18".
Front 4x108 et 38 OR 25 215/40 7x17
Rear 4x108 et 35 245/35 8x18
2. 17" all round.
Front 4x108 et 38 OR 25 215/40 7X17
Rear 4x108 et 35 235/40 7x17
Do these sound right?

Jay,
Do you know the ofset of the SP wheels?
Are you running Front 7x17 215/40 and Rear 245/35

Thanks all much appreciated.

Hi Jay, Thanks.
I called SP apparently the offsets are front 25 rear 32.
They also tell me that the hub needs some modification to fit their hub caps. I am wondering if the proracer 1.2 need the same modification.
Cheers! Mike.

hi v8,the mod was only to the new tvr centre caps they supply.not a major mod.i dont think you will get the same centre caps if any with the dynamics wheels.i should think your tvr ones will fit anyway.cheers ,jay.

You can fit a 8x17 with a 235/40 and 20mm offset so a 215 on a 7.5 will p!ss in.

edited to add, thats at the front

V8 sag,
If I were to put on a 215/40 with 7.5x17, how do I work out the offset?
I know your trying to help but it doesn't take much to confuse me!! I was thinking of 215/40/17 using 7x17 et 25 rather than 7.5x17 on the front.
Rear 245/35/18 using et 35 8x18.

The offset is how far the centreline of the wheel is relative to the hub mounting face. An ET35 wheel will sit 10mm closer to the centre of the car than an ET25 wheel of the same size. With too high an ET at the front (remember, a high ET means more inset), you will eventually reach the point where the wheel rims will rub the wishbones .... this is BAD ;-) A front ET38 may be getting a bit close for comfort.

Assuming no clearance problems, going for a wider wheel, I would normally want to keep the same offset as the original wheel so that the centreline of the wheel doesn't move (which can cause nasties such as more of a tendency to tramline etc). If you keep the same offset and went to a 7.5 from a 7, your wheel would grow 6.3mm each side. If you were already at you minimum clearance on the inside and had to gain the width on the outside edge, you'd need to decrease the offset, this would change a 7 ET25 to a 7.5 ET19.

Getting back to the point, the 7x17 ET25 is a very good fit on the front and the 215/40 17 tyre fits it perfectly. This matches exactly the SP spec it seems. SP appear to have a slightly lower offset on the rear to mine (32 compared to 35mm), but there is a lot of space in the rear arches, and since the wheel is 8x18 rather than the 7.5x16 original, it sits nicely in the arch anyway (gaining about 4mm outboard and 8mm inboard over the Estorils).

hi v8,i think i went with silverstone option and kept to a 40 profile tyre i dont like the rubber band look of the 35 tyre.so it would be 215x40 17 front and 225x40 18 rear.its a safe option to clear the arches and anything else that might rub.hope this helps.cheers, jay.

The overall radius of a 225/40 18 is 637mm, the 245/35 18 is 629mm, so while the 225/40 is 20mm narrower, it is 8mm taller.

In my case, the original 245/45 16 had an overall diameter of 627mm, so as far as clearance is concerned, the 245/35 18 was a closer match to the original (and preserved the original width which I like!). However, there does seem to be plenty of space in a Grifs rear arches so I would imagine you could successfully stray both wider and taller if you chose to ....
