Red 968 CS part 3 (final)
Discussion
I set off this morning on British rails finest to collect the car,the HPI checkout wiyhout a blemish (always good).
Insurance on a classic policy was cheaper than expected,so my enthusiasm was a little up.
The payment and dealing with the seller was fine, the guy was older more mature shall we say and had the CS for 5 years,he was a bit choked to see her go.So I took it easy out of the station car park.
I have now driven the car for 160 miles and I start to understand what the excitement of the 968 CS is about!
I had to come back via M4 M3 & the hell of M25 rush hour. This was ok to get a feel for the car.
I have one huge annoyance and a question at 75-80 mph I get a shimmy shake type action from the steering wheel, not at 60 mph not at 90mph and was impressed with stability at 120mph...Oh didn't I mention the private test facilty?
I hope this shake is purely down to poor balancing of the new tyres, there is also a note on the last service at Dick Lovett 550 miles ago thet the wishbone are perishing and require replacement.
Does anyone else have experience of this on 968 or 944.
I like the idea of replacing the bushes,,I have done this on MGB etc..piece of cake,,,is it as simple on one of these? Also as I will do some track work, should I replace with polyurethane bushes?
Any idea of torque settings or a link to a site detailing this job?
As I had been on motorway and could feel the potential,I went on a slight detour to one of my favourite B roads...twice round the wet roundabout,,she held with quite a bit of boot in 2nd,helped by the excellent thick CS leather steering wheel..I then get to my favourite B road, mostly wet but drying out...nice corners approach at 3 figure speeds use the box, boot it out...Nice! The CS made me look like quite a good driver..ok you weren't there, hardly a fair comment!
More impressed than I thought I would be up to now, particularly compared to last weekends test run.
Suspension seems spot on,M030 would be too harsh for the road, even the seats were ok making it not yesterdays urgency to get the fixed buckets fitted,,,still gonna happen though.
The only problem was during the M25 hail storm around 4.30 where the driver side wiper arm popped out of it's socket at 85mph,leaving just the passenger wiper in motion.I haven't had this happen to me since I had an original Lotus elan, but you expect & forgive that on an S130.
So any views guys on the wobble would be helpful.
many thanks.

Worn wishbone joints are not re-bushable- well not unless you have an engineering shop, but new ones are pretty cheap, its a common problem, just dont ring your OPC unless you want to faint!!
Oh and the vibration is IMHO 50% chance of wheel balance 40% chance of the shagged wishbones & 9% shagged steering rack or rod ends Edited to add and 1% of it being somat tottaly different- just so I don't look like a total knob just in case ya wheel nuts are loose or something

Thanks for that Alex...I will go with wheel bal tomorrow..on the bushes i am sure i saw polyurethane ones adverised for silly money somewhre like £15 (obviously unfitted)is this a good thing or will i get too much vibration on the road?
I think i will be looking more than 1% nob if wheel nuts are loose and I have posted,,,I am sure they are fine, not that i will ever tell now!

Fantastic choice Clubsport, believe it or not, Guards Red is my favourite colour for the 968 at the moment (infact for most Porsche's right now)
All that remains for you to do, is post some pictures of this wonderful red beast!
Cheers,
Marv

Ah, that "first roundabout in your Club Sport" feeling. Nothing quite like it is there ? No poncey PSM either , just a beautifully balanced chassis and wonderful weight distribution.
Four wheel drifting should be this simple in all cars !
Not fair you have either got the S or the supercharged wagon to kick my ar5e with!
I may well do a quick session Monday evening at Brands just to keep my hand in,only 15 mins away so it would be rude not to!
Paul, I am going to book Pistonfest,,did you give it any more thought?
You can show me how to drink beer as well as drive.

2 pints?????? which part of up north are you from?
I am not mad on the tents, but there should be hotels nearby, should be able to sort something out...I am going to book the thing and wing it!
It would be good to see you,if not I am sure we will catch up at the next Brunters or whatever...particularly as Der.....is raising his game.

Hi Steve,...I still have the 996 and as you know think it is a fantastic car...I may sell it as I just feel it is a lot of money to have tied up in one car.
The 968 will be used for some track fun and also for carrying loads that won't fit in the other cars.
If I do sell the 996,I will definitely get another rear engined porker,,I had the idea of getting a 993RS,
but for the price they cost are they 4-5 times the fun of the CS? Also I will strt getting into the money tied up scenario...Should keep 996 really..
