I am currently looking at getting a Monaro VXR so I strolled over to the local Vauxhall dealership and after a bit of chat they had a look on their computer system (Network Q I believe) and came back with a few results of what was available.

Basically there were 2 Monaro VXRs both on 06 plates for £27-28K which is out of my price range unfortunately.

I've got upto £23K to play with which obviously didn't cut the mustard with the Vauxhall boys.

Realistically what kind of VXR am I looking at getting for £23K, both age and condition wise?

I was hoping that I would get a VXR with a bit of manufacturer warrant left on it?

Also does anyone know if an extendable warrenty is offered by Vauxhall and if so, how much does it cost for how long?

Thanks in advance.

If I was you I would contact Picadors or Greens and see what they can do for you.

No extendable warranty yet, despite many of us requesting one...no response from Vauxhall.
Ho hum rolleyes

For £23k from a dealer you'll get an 05 CV8.
You MAY get a 6.0 VXR if you're lucky but you'll have to be very quick to be first in a queue.
You WILL get a 5.7 VXR for that which many people say is the best one to have.

If you can stretch another 2 or 3k you'll be laughing.

Sounds a bit pricey to me, what were the mileages? Gr33n5 were selling pre reg for £23-24k a month or so ago I think. Is this a sign that as supply runs down prices are recovering

The mileages on both were pretty low to be fair.

I'm a bit disappointed as I did have my heart set on a pretty new 6.0L VXR.

There is always the private sale option though I guess and I will get more warranty on a private sale for my money.

It's just the first time I will be parting with such a sum so I wanted to buy from a dealer for that extra comfort although from what I hear, most Vauxhall dealers don't have a clue about Monaro's anyway....

What are peoples' opinions about buying private over dealership?

Also what am I looking at getting for £23K if going private?

Thanks again!!

I bought my HSV privately a few years back, I did a finance search and found loads outstanding so I made one big cheque out to the finance company and a very small one to the old owner. Apart from that check the normal stuff for buying a second hand car, body condition tyres etc. At the value you are looking at you could get yourself a bargain, just check that it has a service history and you should be on to a winner. If you do find a bargain check it out quick and buy because there will probably be a number of people on to it.

Picked up a 55 plate VXR in Black two weeks ago with 3.5K on the clock from a Network Q dealer for £24K.

Not sure of your situation but I had no part-ex or finance requirement. Made sure I had funding lined up and hit Autotrader, Exchange and Mart, PH Classifieds and ebay hard. Found one at £25K and managed to haggle down.

First call to the dealer was on a Wednesday evening and picked up the car Saturday morning. In summary as mentioned by others previously believe there are some reasonable prices out there just need to move very quickly when you find something suitable.

P.S. Also tried the guy at this site: www.whatdealoncars.co.uk/. He was pretty helpful and tracked down one for me, unfortunately didn't locate one until after I had committed to my purchase. Either way he makes no upfront charge so might be worth a call.

I already had a depressing image in my head of what dealing with a non-specialist (i.e. not Greens or Picador) dealer would be like so went straight to Greens. Got my 06 with 27k miles for a whisker under £22k 6 weeks ago, I bit their arm off, it sold then unsold the day before I bought it!

With something like the 'ro it might take a long while before the one at a sensible price turns up, still remember the 6.0 VXR that went for under 20k from a dealer 6 months ago with low miles too...absolute bargain that one!

MagicGreg,
Have you looked on the PistonHeads classifieds there are quite a few there, including my one, it's the fastest colour as well, looks fast just sitting in the drive and has some of the right bits.
The manufactures warantee is always three years from date of registration as far as I know.

I would hang on for a cpl of months. Supply of 6.0 cars will get better when VXR8's get delivered. we have a few due in as p/x already.

Thaks for the replies chaps!

I too will be in a similar situation, no p/x and no finance agreement, just £23k cash.

Probably does seem wise to hang on for a few months as prices may drop again slightly and as said, there will likely be more 6.0L VXRs aroud that have been traded in for the VXR8.

Hopefully one of the garages in Middlesbrough will be able to sort something out for me, if not I'll be looking private with as much warranty on it as possible.

As for mods and servicing, its looking like I will have to head down south to the likes of Greens, Monkfish etc.

Thanks again

I just got a 2007 6L VXR for £25k from main dealer - think there are 6L VXR 55 Platers kicking about a £22-£24k and 6L VXR 54 Platers at £20-£22k privately.

Seems daft, but as many with a standard car get it chipped /performance pac'd, fitted with enhanced breaks & fitted with sports suspension then you may as well add £4-£6k to the price and just buy a 04 or 05 VXR in the first place.

I owned VXR's and the standard CV8 and would say its like comparing the last generation a M5 BMW to a 540i in terms of character as the suspension, breaks, engine, bodykit, wheels etc are all enhanced by HSV to create the VXR, whilst the CV8 is a standard Holden.

Both are a superb drive in my opinion, its just that if you want something harder focused then it is worth buying the VXR in the first place.

The VXR I plan to get will only be receiving an exhaust upgrade - Wortec system and a stereo upgrade, so I don't really plan to change that much.

Wanted a VXR simply due to the styling and upgrades that it received, as I don't plan to change that much it seems the obvious choice, had I wanted to change the majority of the car I would opt for an 04 VXR.

I'm going to try and hold out for another 2-3 months until I get my VXR in the hope that supply increases and price decreases slightly, seems to make sense however large the urge is to just go out and buy one now.

Been watching some of the videos available on youtube and google video of the 6.0L VXRs with the Wortec system and the sound is immense, makes it sound like a big V8 should.

Any sound clips or videos that anyone has would be much appreciated, send to my e-mail address if you prefer.

Thanks again

Good luck with the holding out for 2-3 months.

I promised myself exactly the same thing, lasted nine days after selling my previous car
