First post on here after reading many a thread !

Ok question is I have owned a 993 C4 for the last four years or so, last of the air cooled as we all say! Has a full factory fit RS body kit and is featured in the Essential Guide to the 993 printed last year and as informed by the author is the only 993 C4 RS kitted Porsche in the UK in Meridian.

Its been a great car over the last four years and has just turned 37,500k on the clock. The temptation is getting the better of me as the years role on specially as the 996 Turbos are now at very reasonable prices!

Do I stick with the classic or go for a 996 Turbo, seen a couple and just cannot make my mind up. Anyone moved on from a 993 to a 996 Turbo? Regret it? Love it? comments would be appreciated!

Depends what you’re after?

The 996 Turbo is a couple of steps up in performance terms, it's make the 993 feel like a old slow car by comparison, but there’s more to Porsche ownership than speed, if the older style Porsche float’s your boat, go for the 993 Turbo?

You have IMHO the best looking 911 - a low mileage classic that's getting rarer and rarer - unless you have the roads to use a turbo on I'd stick with the 993. Having said that the 996 tt is awesome.

First question for me is why do you want the 996 Turbo?

If it's for more speed you've got to question how much more you can use on the road.

I went from a 911 3.2 Carrera to 993 C4 and back to a 911 3.2 Carrera (plus got a Caterham for the weekend) because there's only so much speed I could use on the road.

Personally I'd stick with you're 993 and get a toy for the weekend.

I can't see it myself. The 993 is a tough act to follow. I've spoken to several 996 owners (mainly GT3) all of whom regret selling their previous 993s.

Surely, a 993 Turbo is the logical progression. Also, how much of the performance can you really use on the road?

I changed from a 993 C4 to a 996 turbo and don't regret it. I loved the 993 but it was just too small for me and the family. So I traded it for a 996, went the whole hog and got the TT. It is a very, very different experience to the air cooled car. The TT doesn't howl like a flat 6 is meant to..... but the 996 TT is..... , well, give one a go..... and you'll see.

Cheers for the comments chaps, my 993 has always been a weekend toy hence the mileage. It was just the fact of looking for something a little more up to date handling wise.

I do have the roads near me for the increase in power, I have looked for some low mileage 993 Turbo's to begin with but they are not easy to find! Funny enough my local OPC where I have the 993 serviced have just had a 993 Turbo come in, Arena Red with 54k on the clock. Popped to have a look and its condition was a little unloved for my liking.

Took a 996 Turbo out yesterday for the first time, did miss the engine note of mine and it was a bit turbo laggy (may have tried tried a duff one) but then again I feel it requires a totally different driving style. The driving position was a lot more comfortable and I feel I would use it more than the 993 just for ease of use etc.

I appreciate all your comments and as this indecisiveness continues I am not going to jump in feet first just yet!

Laggy? That's the main thing that I didn't notice. Not from the K16 version anyway. As for the exhaust, you can always change it. I did.

In my opinion, it's all about looks.

I rest my case.

It is almost a year since my old 993 C2s went and my 996 Turbo arrived and it has taken almost a year to come to terms with my decision.

You won’t need me to tell you the myriad of virtues possessed by your current car and lets face it pretty much half this particular forums content has been given over to the subject for years but to me it was almost like changing manufacturer such was the difference.

My advice though is to seek out a 996 turbo (or variant) that ups the bar to such a level that you enter a whole new world of motoring. Whilst the old 993 was pretty rapid my X50 is on another plane particularly after a little fettling. Sure you miss the thud of the door shutting which as we all know is once of the finest noises imaginable in a car and the sort of thing that breeds confidence from the moment you turn the key but for about £60k I now have something that pretty much nothing this side of a Murci will keep pace with.

For me it was I finally got round to sticking it on a track day in the company of some truly major league Supercars courtesy of the DeTomaso Drivers club charity day at Goodwood that the X50 kept pace with the likes of a Mac SLR, Murcie, AMG CLK DTM, Zonda and several others that you fully appreciate just how good they are.

So if you do make the move, go and get a truly Uber-Nutter –Bar Steward spec one or even a GT2 as least that way you can comfort yourself in the knowledge that pretty much nothing has a cats chance in hell of getting near you.

PS To the owner of the 360 CS I encountered on the way back from Fearnsport last Saturday, nice try mate!

It really depends what you are looking for..the 996tt especially with a re-map is an awesome car for using a lot and driving quickly safely..the only problem with the 996(and i include most variants)is the ease of usability of the car and the market it was targetted at has tended to attract non -enthusiasts to the marque, moreso than earlier 'acquired taste' models.Because of this and the increased supply the 996tt is not particularly rare and therefore doesnt feel that special to own(i had mine for 2 years and not once did i get a passer by show any interest..within a month of owning a 993tt it attracts a lot of car enthusiast interest). My conclusion would be if you want to drive quickly, arent worried about rarity/exclusivity and also not worried about the looks and depreciation of the 996tt go for it because they are awesome...but if you want to own a rare car to cherish and enjoy the quirkiness of it stick with a 993..alternatively buy a 993tt which should be the best compromise..it has been for me.

I understand what your mean KayC the 993 always seems to get peoples attention which after owning for so long you begin to wonder why at times but it is just one of those cars that may always will!

As my initial search for a nice 996TT has only just begun I have no idea regarding variants others have commented on therefore I need to understand this a little better. The one I tested on Saturday was a 51 reg with 22,500 on the clock and I thought at £46,500 was a good price(was at a Ferrari dealer mind) therefore have NO idea if that means an earliy spec TT engine or not?? I only know 993's through and through!

The GT2 would be a great choice but are still on the high side for me as I had given myself a 50k limit. Again all your comments are appreciated and I am amazed at the response for my first post on here, decent comments and a genuinely nice set of chaps thank you.

I think all 996tt engines are the same irrespective of year but i could be wrong...later cars had Bose, glove box, auto dimming mirror etc but not a lot else, hence early cars offer great value. Some people say that later cars had a better interior finish but my 01 car was faultless inside..no squeeks or rattles etc.

Old porsches do attract some attention, as do a lot of 'classic' cars. My 996 tt with aerokit attracts more attention than I neccessarily want, with a fair few people being positive about its looks. Horses for courses and all that but to me the 993 now looks old. Nice, but old.

Agree the 993 looks old but not yet classic, the 930 and to a lesser extent the turbo II are begining to look classic so a 996TT or 930 (or both)give you the classic versus functional options.

Many people cant believe my 993tt is 10 years old. Some think it's nearly new (obviously not from enthusiasts). It does show that at least from the exterior it still has timeless virtues.

Same here, also the 997 looks a lot like the 993 at a glance, so in my opinion they certainly don't look old.......the shape has always been timeless, hence stuttgart reverting back to the traditional looks, at the end of the day it ain't broken so why fix it, 40yrs practice.
