Hi guys

Pulled up outside a friends house last night to find that my car (w reg boxster s)had smoke billowing out the side air vent....no real tell tale signs previously of anything being out of the ordinary although I did suffer a momentary loss of power at about 5000rpm during the drive over....anyhow got out the car to find it was also spilling its guts all over the road..massive oil leak...at which point I waited an hour and rolled the car back to see how much more oil it would loose oover night and then went and drank a bottle of whiskey.

Went to look this morning and not much more of a leak (because theres no oil left in it)...anyway cardinal sin I know but assumed it was sh*gged so I started it up and it started first time wihtout a problem...although I can play connect 4 with the lights on the dash. Am I wrong in thinking if the intermediate shaft was screwed that the car wouldnt have started?

I was due to part ex it today which now clearly cant happen. The car doesnt have OPC warranty and sods law the cacky autoprotect warranty expired....you guessed it...yesterday!!

Any advice welcome and needed.....

Question is how much to fix though - need to get a diagnosis asap.

No OPC warrnty feeling suitably stupid now as i listend to the salesman who told me the warranty it came with was as comprehensive as the OPC warranty and that was was they supplied all their cars with one (they only sell porsche) with one on.

I'm going to see if it will hold any oil in a bit...now if only i could get rid of the damn engine warning light...did someone say break the bulb.....;-)

So to sum up, you knew the car had no oil in it, so you started it.

You could buy an off the shelf OBD2 reader and clear the light yourself. Is it possible the car was overfilled with oil?

Vesuvious - thanks for the constructive advice...I'm no troll....just one very upset car owner who was due to p/x a car with a massive oil leak that looked like it had stopped. I wasnt thinking straight and just wanted to get it to a garage to get it looked at but when I saw the engine warning light didnt go off I turned the car off immediately.

I checked the oil this morning before starting up and despite the vast majority of it being on the floor the and the electronic check reading low I looked at the dipstick and it was still registering at minimum level line. I'm quite happy to post video footage of the incident if you like as I filmed it on my phone.

What sort of money are we talking for the reader - not that i would as i want to get it sorted before p/xing it? I put some more oil in but its still not holding it which looks like bad news.

did you start the car when there was no oil in it?

Greig - not over full but it had been using a little too much oil for my liking prior to the incident, probably put about 1.5 litres of Mobile 1 in over the last couple of months.

as i said the oil level was at the mimimum notch on the dipstick and my firends hous eis a few miles from Racing Developments who've looked after my car in the past, the plan was to drive there very gently and fix the leak. I know it was stupid to start it but its a horrible feeling thinking your engine might have gone and I was suprised it even turned over, I cant just sit around fearing the worst part of my un-knowledgable non-mechanic mind thought it was the best way forward.

Am I alone in being a bit shocked at the response to this problem ... I.e. make it look like it's fine and let it be someone else's problem.

Can you imagine buying your dream car to have it spew it's contents all over your drive that night ?

Come on guys ...

Get the bloody thing towed/lifted to your indie , let him assess/fix the problem , and then make a decision whether to sell it or not .

You might even sleep better that night.

Was just thinking exactly the same, in a forum thats so quick to criticise dealers for the pettiest of things ( not been acknowledged when picking up a car etc)cant beleive so many would tart up and get rid so easily. Maybe some comments were tongue in cheek I dont know.

No, Ballcock, you were not alone. I shared your thoughts as I read the thread, but couldn't quite believe what I was seeing. Good to read your post, and certainly that of 911wise.

Woah woah woah...did i not say i wanted to fix it before part ex'ing? My comments about breaking the bulb were said in jest in a vain attempt to cheer myself up.

As it happens i only bought the car 6 months ago but its been nothing but trouble. Although i didnt buy from an OPC i did buy from a reputable sepcialist who only sell porsches. Clutching at straws I just checked the dates and i purchased on 18th Nov but for some reason the warranty is dated 17th nov...i hope meaning it runs until the 18th ie the day if the incident. No idea why they got the date of the warranty wrong.

Fearing the worst ie catastrophic rms failure leading to intermediate shaft damage etc does anyine know if an autoprotect warranty with a full value of purchase price limit would cover the work that would need doing?

Hi Sorry to hear about this and it certainly sounds like the intermediate bearing has collapsed to let the oil out this quick. Before getting to involved i would run through your options
There is no way you could bodge this up,not that you even would want to. The cheapest route is to look around for another second hand engine.
I dont no what the trade in offer was but you could see what he offers you as it is.I have seen a few 996 and Boxsters put through the auctiions as non runners.
I have also seen them on EBay, It all depends on what the car is like condition wise.
If you stick the car into a repair place then you are pretty much in there hands.
It all depends on how much of a rush you are.

My comments weren't specifically aimed at you (though don't deny it , you did enquire after the cost of a diagnostic reader!!!) I was more shocked at the comments made to you of 'bodge it up and move it on ...'
I feel pissed for you that all this has happened with such rotten timing , and I really do hope it's just something minor , and you can carry on with the trade in.

But do the right thing mate.

Best of luck with it.
