Audi 5 cyl 10v - CTS?

Got one of the aforementioned 2.3L lumps in an Audi Quattro Coupe 1990 - unfortunatley the temperature guage isn't working. There's an obvious temperature sensor on top of the thermostat housing but that seems to work normally, 400 ohms ish hot and much higher cold. Is there a different sensor for the gage and if so where is it? Or is there something else I should be looking at. The Radiator fan cuts in and out normally, engine runs and idles well...

I'd have thought it would be positioned before the thermostat to show the water temperature in the engine, the one on the radiator is usually for the radiator fan. Although I'm no expert on your engine.
