Does anyone know a)what spec gearbox is in my 1989 e30 318i with an M40 engine or how i can find out what gearbox is fitted, also b) what engines other BMW engines mate directly to the bellhousing? I think the M42 318is engine will work any others? Thanks in advance.

m50 2.5 24v will fit but the propshaft won't be the right length.

Cheers, not worried about propshaft length, basically my e30 has just been arse ended and written off, thinking about putting the engine and box in one of my other "project" cars, then once I've made sure it works with a M40 engine look to get a bit more power.

I cant rememeber thegearbox name exactly, I think it's the Getrag 240.

The M42 318IS engine will bolt on, as will the M20 six cylinder anbd the M50/M5X 24 valvers and probably the "M" equivalents the S50/S54s.

The 24 valvers in the E36 and E34 are canted over at 30 degrees in their application, the M20 definately at only 20degs in the E30.

Im not 100% sure but I THINK the M40 and M42s are canted over at 20 degs in your E30.

This has to be tackled obviously in terms of package and gearshift linkage.

This will be my biggest issue when trying to fit a 6 speed 26 onto my M20 in my E21.

Good luck!
