right, should be straightforward enough, but just want to check on what is 'normal'

instructions are quite clear, check when engine is at operating temperature.

but, when the engine is just cold, is it usual to have an oil reading somewhere between max and min or does the oil sink to below the min level?

also when checking at operating temperature, is the marking easy to read? clear reason why i'm asking is that there doesn;t seem to be any reading at all, although there is a smear of oil up the dipstick, but not after wiping and reinserting and rechecking. would be interested therefore to know what other peoples dipsticks look like!

as long as there is oil on your dip stick when you check the oil at running temp it should be ok,that is only a reseviour where it is checked from, there's loads more where that came from.

Hi Rob,

I checked mine yesterday and the oil when hot (engine just switched off) was above the Max level on the dipstick but quite smeared around so difficult to get an accurate reading as to the actual level. When it is cold it reads above Max as well.

How are you coping with the noise? Mine is pretty noisy and sounds fantastic , I bet your neighbours love you now biglaugh!

Adrian,

When the engine is cold the dipstick is clean.... when hot it is just a smeary mess, so really cannot tell.

The noise is awesome and I love the popping on slow down in 2nd and 3rd. I just 'kin love the whole car. Washed and polished it at the weekend, the colour is stunning. Although cleaning it has revealed a large number of very small stone chips. In a way though that looks cool - like it's been driven and is not a garage queen. I certainly intend using it. Are you taking yours to Bedford?

1. Take the car for a drive and get the oil up to temp (dont need an excuse for that!)
2. Stop engine, get out, remove bonnet cover, prepare tissue/rag, oil bottle and funnel
3. Start engine, run for 30secs, turn off
4. remove the dip stick, wipe it clean with rag/tissue, then replace, then remove it again to get a clear reading
5. From min to max is approx 1L ish - if it needs some top it up in 1/4L intervals and repeat and re-check so you dont overfill

I usually check ours once a week...but its a daily drive and can do 500-600 miles a week sometimes...the other half goes to work in it most days which is a 80mile round trip. Its done 14K miles now and the oil consumption is really good (compared to previous SP6 engine in the Tuscan) - with general fast road use it seems to use about 1/2L - 1L every 2K miles.

I run it on Silkolene Pro-S 15/50 though...I find that thin mobil stuff just seems to disappear !

no worries - just bear in mind the engine is dry sumped, so always make sure its warm when you check, and just after stopping running..

Do you just place the dipstick back in or screw it home for the reading?

I just place it back in after cleaning it to take the measurement...but dont screw it down (on/off againg)..if you top it up measuring this way the most you can be is the width of the thread overfull...not worth worrying about

I think thats overfilled; that will blow oil back into the airbox when you throw the car around
