I know there have been lots of threads on similar subject, most pretty useful, but not specific to my question, so here goes.
Need advice on tyres to fit on standard 15/16 inch wheels-Griff 500, on an M plate.
Just been quoted for 2 x Toyo T1S for front and 2 x T1R for rear, fitted, balanced £510 all in.
The quote was for Z rated tyres (I confirmed this over the phone). Will the front ones (T1S) come as Z rated as promised?
Is this good value?
Glad of advice. Marktank

Not very good value IMO - should be able to get down to between 300 - 400 pounds. They should be ZR rated - that's probably why they're a mix of T1Rs and older T1Ss.

MT, I gave up on the search for Toyos in 205 Z rated. I telephoned over 15 different tyre stockists, no one could find any in Z - so I'd be careful there. A Toyo "specialist" also informed me that they didn't make a Z rated T1-S in 205/15/55??

I have Toyos on the back - very good, very soft - but if you're not doing 000's of miles a year - it shouldn't be a problem. I wanted SO-2'S but they didn't have them at the time.

I have just had 2 Dunlop SP9000's fitted to the front - these seem to be the only Z rated 205 you can find easily, nice looking tyre (if you're into that sort of thing!!). They were £151 fitted outside my house by Etyres. Excellent service, really nice bloke - I would definately recommend.

My rears were fitted 6 months ago, I bought these from mytres.com I think they were about £210. I've just checked their site, they are doing SO-2's at the moment 245/45/16 Z for £233.40 including delivery.

If it was me, I would order the SO-2's from mytres, have them deliverd (takes about a week). Order the SP9000's from etyres and get the guy to fit them when he turns up, he'll probably only charge a tenner, as they are franchisees.

All in £360 ish??? Worth a try.

Before ordring SO-2's, make sure they are SO-2 PP's (Pole Postion) otherwise they are the wrong tyre for the griff. If you have found a PP version you should buy a lottery ticket as you are one lucky person as production of these was stopped 3+ years ago. The standard SO-2's (non PP) were for porsche fitment and have different characteristics in both side wall and compound which are not suitable for a TVR due to differences in weight, power etc. The same goes for the SO-3's, as these were not supposed to be for TVR fitment either!

Your only choise is Dunlop or Toyo really unless anyone else can suggest an alternative.

Falken a good tyre or Khumo and even Nankang. All softer compound more suited to our lighter cars.

Don't know if these are any good or sensible, but mytyres do "Hankook Ventus Prime" tyres in 225/50/15 and 245/45/16 with a W rating - and front and rear are the same product as far as I can tell. I may go for these soon unless someone advises against this - a bit worried I've never heard of them before though

If we placed a bulk order with Bridgestone/Toyo for for some tyres to the spec we need, do you think they'd go for it and do a one-off run?

That's exactly the thing owners clubs do with other marques when things like Tyres get harder to find, not sure about the TVRCC on this though.

I asked one of the suppliers about these and they said(something I can't remember) that they weren't really suitable for TVR. That was all they had in so it wasn't a case of them just trying to flog tyres they had.

If one of you guys is serious about a bulk order, get your info together and drop me a line. We have a good contact at Toyo who supports us at the Growl whose details I can pass on to you if you want...

cheers

I managed to get a set of Toyo T1S s all round for mine a year or so back from tyre spot , all in was £360 and they do make a T1S in 205/55/15 in a ZR rating because thats what ive got on the front 225 on the rear 93 Pre serp no power steering . The Toyos are a really good tyre IMHO but i had heard they where getting difficult to source in a ZR rating .

Thanks for all the info.thumbup

So apart from the price (as this will be a secondary consideration after choosing the right size/rating/make) It is still not very clear.confused

I will be using the car (Griff 500, M plate) normal(?) daily use, no track etc and during the winter.

Which is best for the front...

Choice number 1 - "SP9000 fronts from Mytyres 225/50/15 £205"

Or number 2 - "I have just had 2 Dunlop SP9000's fitted to the front - these seem to be the only Z rated 205 you can find easily, nice looking tyre (if you're into that sort of thing!!). They were £151 fitted outside my house by Etyres".

Which should it be.....225 or 205 width at the front? confused

And for the back......should I go for the Toyo T1R or T1S because.....

"SO-2's at the moment 245/45/16 Z for £233.40 including delivery."

"Not sure about SO-2 did someone not say these are for Porsches and not suitable for TVR's?" and "Correct"

Or go with.....

"I managed to get a set of Toyo T1S s all round for mine a year or so back from tyre spot , all in was £360 and they do make a T1S in 205/55/15 in a ZR rating because thats what ive got on the front 225 on the rear"

So I could end up with "SP9000 fronts225/50/15" and "T1S 225/?/16" on the rear. headache

Confused?

So am I.

Hi Mark. wavey

For fronts I guess it's down to whether your cars got PAS or not, but the most common sizes are 205/55/15 for non PAS and 225/50/15 for PAS cars.

For the rears the most common tend to be either 225/50/16 or 245/45/16.
