Guys,

I want to have my pictures bound in a photo book, you know the kind of thing; hardback, my choice of photos, my text and layout etc. The subject matter will be mostly family pics taken with a P&S digital camera, with the occasional film-scanned image thrown in for good measure!

There seem to be quite a few web sites out there that can do it for me, but I'm looking for positive feedback from anybody who has done this before. I could of course just pick a supplier at random, but I'd prefer to use one with some positive feedback.

What's the best approach, upload, and build the album on line, or use one of those with downloadable software?

All advice and comments welcome.

www.photobox.co.uk/gifts.html#books give a good, swift service. Books are good quality... printing is pretty good. Not up to their photo paper, but good enough for family snaps etc.

Another vote for photobox. I also use colourmailer as well. Similar quality but a bit more flexible for larger ones.

If you want a big jump in quality (and price) then I can recommend www.bookedimages.com - stunning, but not cheap.

www.fotobook.co.uk are superb quality with really good customer service. Highly recommended. They are more professional looking than the ones from photobox.

Billiant they look fab. I have used photobox books in the past and whilst a fab idea they are not exactly what I would like, ie they don't have enough leeway in the design for me, I like to have more input in the design and where captions are put, this site looks just like what I am looking for and they are no more expensive than photobox either.

Thanks

Thanks guys, they were both on my list of ones to try, but it looks like fotobook may deliver the best quality results.

I used to use yophoto - good flexible offline software and very swift turnaround (1d usually). The last one they did was sh1te however - the res has got given lower and for some reason they've decided to ignore my colour profile and crank the colour saturation right up. I'm having words...

Anyone used the Kodak ones that you can order via iPhoto/Aperture? Any good?

You can make the photobox ones look however you want, simply create a page size image, make it up how ever you like, upload it and then set that to full page in the book.

I'm researching photobooks at the moment as well. I've settled on http://www.viovio.com even though they're based in the US. Prices are pretty cheap but crucially everyone whos used them has said the quality is notch above photobox/kodak etc. No limit on min/max pages either so much more flxible. The site does suck though. I'm hoping to place an order this week so I'll report back on what the quality is like.

You might want to try the photobooks at Printing-1 (Windows& MacOS).

In the Times “Digital Memories” supplement last week FotoInsight advertised a FREE Photo Booklet Print [26 pages (+cover) digital photo booklet, W14xH13cm / 5"x5.5", delivery £1.79]. The PhotoBook software at http://fotoinsight.co.uk/ is also free and the £8.- voucher seems to work on all their printed photo albums. My photo book is great and arrived well in time for Father’s day.
