Leads & Plugs

Afternoon Chaps,

Cricket rained off so I am posting some omportant stuff instead. I have got to change the plugs and leads at the weekend and need to know any recommendations for either of the mentioned items and cost too. Also what is the gap on the plugs, I cant seem to find it in the bible.

Re leads - beware the male/female ends faff! Different distributor caps used with different terminals so make sure you have right set.

I've checked my Steve Heath book (1st edition I think) and in the table of general info in the "under the bonnet bit" (Chapter 2) it quotes all sorts of useful stuff incl plug gap which is apparantly 0.032ins or 0.024 dependent on RC7YCC plugs or RC7YC for the 2.9 V6 - the 2.8 says 0.024ins with RN9YC or AGR22 plugs and for the V8S 0.032 ins with apparently 'various' plugs (whatever that means). Can't help with the leads other than to say they are worth changing as they do go off with age as well as use. I got a decent brand of all silicon leads from a local factor for the S3C and they are fine - whether a more expensive set would be better I don't know but no doubt others will have a view.

Leads first, I very recently got some from local Ford Dealer. Not cheap, but the plug end is very nicely made and sturdy, plus they are numbered on the lead itself so no confusion. Problem I had was my Motorcraft distributor cap had male ends, no longer available so changed to a female type, again Motorcraft (Ford) OE.

Plugs, for my S3c 2.9 I used the NGK recommended plug from their very good web site.

Just got a quote from motaquip in the local town and they have got the NGK plugs and original ford leads £27.08 inc VAT for the lot. Sounds like a bargain to me. lets hope they all fit!!

Leads from ford Granada 2.9i (will need to check male/female ends before I depart but they have both).

I could be wrong but seem to think that the normal Granada 2.9 leads have the wrong ends at one end; I think the ones I got to match everything else for fit was listed for an earlier Ford model so do check the end fittings before buying.

Thank all,

All sorted. The plugs had the right end on them and I asked for the standard 1991 granada plug lead so they must be the ones. I do have the autoquip reference number at home so will post it for the leads and the plugs tonight for anyone else looking.
