I'd really fancy a decent 2.7RS replica. What sort of price is right for a good 'un at the moment? Any opinions on these:

Gulf blue, 3.0 engine, £40k: www.legendsracing.co.uk/CarDetails.asp?Type=Road&ID=125 (they have a lovely Espada, but that is a debate for another time...)
Viper Green, 2.7 engine, £50k, looks gorgeous, left a message but they won't call me back: www.thehairpincompany.co.uk/
Cheaper white one, 2,7 engine, £30k: www.eurocars-uk.co.uk/carsforsale.html#_self

I've been a silver one for just over £30k too, can't get the web page to open.

Any opinions?? Am I mad? Use will be 1 oe 2 track days a year, general polishing, etc, etc.

and 2 on here : www.911classic.co.uk/cars_for_sale.htm
white at £46k, black at £40k. Rubbish website though as it tries to open all 90+ pictures.

All look lovely but what can you tell until you see them.

Is the green one really worth 20k more than the white one?

a classic 911 is the only way i would go. personally I prefer the cars that are not made to look like anything other than what they are. You don't want to be forever saying 'no but it's exactly the same! all the time!

have you had a look on www.rgruppe.org/ these guys know a thing or two about classic 911's and might offer some inspiration. yum

I also think that to turn an old porsche into an rs replica is the best and easist way to inflate it's price above what it's really worth, especialy in the current market.

In a way, I think that's what I was getting at in my question. I'd really like one, but £50k for a copy? 964RS, 993RS, both horribly overpriced in my opinion too. Only 996 GT3 looks good value right now. For the amount I'd use it, I can't help thinking that a really lovely 2.7 replica would be more fun...

Just interested that you think genuine 964 & 993RS are over priced, yet are looking at replicas which don't state which model the donor car was for up to £50k???? thay may have been based on £7k worth of knackered SC !
I agree an RS replica certainly looks fun, but I wouldn't get over excited about it being great value or any real investment potential.

I haven't looked at any yet.... I agree with you, just need some sensible voices to drown out the devil on the other shoulder.

You can create an RS replica from many different cars a 73 e/s/t will be most authentic from a period point of view but as it's not a real RS does the donor car matter ?

You could use a Supersport and do an RSR.

If your after a lookalike rather than a replica you can create a terrific car that I believe will be desirable to many.

You can create a car that will drive arguably better than the origional that it is built to "look like".

For my money build something mental and enjoy, on a track day they will all want a look.

clap good advice from that man ^. Have you considered doing it as a project? Probrably would'nt be as expensive as paying top wack from a stealer and at the end of it you would have a car with all your own chosen spec.

disagree. compared to other models its cheap. 1/3 the price of a 993gt2, certainly not 1/3 the car

At the risk of taking this ever further O/T, with (asking) prices north of £40k the 964 RS is a mite pricey to my mind - but the car that is overpriced IMHO is the 3.2 CS - no racing pedigree or provenance whatsoever (if you discount the fat bloke that rolled his box-fresh one at Paddock Bend back in 1988).

I think everything is getting overpriced, and the market is surely due for a 'correction' at some point.

911 'Club Sport' prices have been fixed in the £25-35k+ bracket for many years and, IMO, it is partly a reflection of their relative rarity but more importantly their usability.

The 964RS is a terrific track toy, but compromised on the road. The 911 CS is great fun on track, but sublime on most roads. It is also one of the toughest 911s ever built.

I have mixed views on 2.7RS replicas. For me 'originality' is best. But there is no denying, there are some good ones that come close to delivering the full RS experience. In fact some were done so well that, with rising restoration costs, they are worth buying to cannibalise for parts in restoring a genuine RS.

need a house price crash first. at which point us poor enthusiasts should be able to pick up some 2.7 bargains, leading us back on topic. ish.

What's pulling 964RS prices up is demand from Europe, reversing the flow of good LHD cars.

As for RHD, there are supposed to be 71 Lightweights and 7 ? Touring in the RHD World --- so unlikely to be affected greatly by UK house prices !

Hardly a recipe for overheating ... particularly not if someone is looking for an exciting, traditionally shaped and reliable 911 with more than a little character. The previous '73 2.7RS' are pulling over £100k for really nice ones.

Why not make a note of prices today and ask yourself this question at the start of the track season next year ?

hmmmm....I remember the early '90s collapse in car prices...it may have knocked a couple of mill off the price of a Bugatti Royale, but it was further down the foodchain where the effects were felt. Arguably, the smaller market for RHD cars might actually cause them to fall further than lhd cars

I would argue there is actually more metal out there to be affected by a correction this time.....Chris W, 964RS is a great car but 15 years on they are still for sale below their original sale price.....this either means thay have potential or the 2000+ lhd cars available have an influence on the price of rhd cars?

if we do get a housing based correction, as far as car prices are concerned, best to stand aside for a while and wait for stability or even vague hint of an upward trend,,,which as far as cycles go...could be years away...or maybe just drive and enjoy the cars while we still can? smile
