...mine only works with the door open! yikes I have had a look but all a bit inaccessible. I have taken the speaker out and checked all the connections. Any ideas? Does the door need to be taken off to make access easier?

Sounds like a loose connection or broken wire. Hope it's the former. You won't really get much better access if you take the inside door skin off; all there really is to get at is the short length of wire that runs to the speaker from the door loom, and you can get to all of this through the speaker hole. Are the speaker connections firm? Does the speaker work with the door shut if it's not in the door? Do things improve if you waggle the exposed bits of wire inside the door when it's shut (speaker out, obviously...)?

My money's on a broken wire just after the "loom" gets into the body of the car. The wires take a sharp turn behind the carpet on the side wall of the footwell, when you shut the door these wires get pushed/pulled around the edge of the hole they go through and the only protection is some tape.

No going to tell you how I know this, but my speakers work OK now with the door closed.....
