i've had my boxster 987 for a few weeks now and am thinking of getting a hardtop for the winter.

any ideas where to get one without selling a kidney and giving the proceeds to an OPC?

Save your money, the soft top is fine in winter.

This is probably the best time of the year to buy a hardtop s/h, but may be worth discussing with your opc, they may give a reasonable discount.

The h/t is worthwhile from Nov to March and, although the hood is fine, the h/t gives the car a totally different look, which I quite like.

You see plenty on offer on Fleabay type Expect to pay £500-600. I agree the soft top is ok for the winter but it can get grubby and marked if your car is not garaged.

Fleabay? £600? I think not. I've seen them going for the usual inflated Fleabay prices...£900 - £1100 and more! And that's for 986 Boxster hardtops. Remember the 987 version is different to the 986 one so you can't just buy a ten year old cheapie.

I agree with BliarOut (Shortly to be BrownOut???) the hardtop is unnecessary. In fact - it's no warmer (the roof is adequately lined anyway) and actually NOT AS QUIET at the windows do not fit as neatly into it (on the 986 at least - may be cured in the 987).

I would be tempted by one if I could get it very cheap and would use it on a few occasions each year if I actually had to undertake journeys in ice and snow. Mine is garaged, of course, so that works for me. If yours will not be garaged you might want it three months of the year. The rest of time you would just be cursing that you can't get the roof down and the BLIMMIN SUN IS SHINING! (If cold).

On my 996 the hard top leaked and the soft top didn't. Go figure biggrin

Sorry Don, a name change is imminent but my political work is done so no BrownOut for the foreseeable future. The next one will be car related

Got garage, so I think I will save my money. Just expected that it would leak, even if just a little because I have been used to driving a car from a well know British/Russian manufacturer (Don't want to start an argument, that one is already running on another thread)

Boxsters look pretty cool with the hard top. 996 looks all wrong (IMO).

Neither should leak.

We did this a few months back - general consensus seemed to be don't bother.

you have to be careful buying them on fleabay as some arent proper porsche hardtop and therefore dont fit as well as the proper ones therefore they leak.

Thanks for the input so far guys, I've tried the dealer route, and could probably upgrade the car for the 2.5k they are asking, seen a couple on flea bay about 1.5k - wrong colour so 2kish by the time its painted frown

I plan to keep the car for years so want to look after it and am worried the roof might be affected in the winter.

the car is garaged overnight, but i'm worried about rain, ice, snow etc, although the dealer recons the roof is not affected by such things, "after all sir they are sold in counties where it snows most of the year"

Here is a conflicting argument for you. Do you use the car in London or another big smoky hole? If so, get the hard top!

We took ours off on March at that warm spell and absolutely love the cab but over the miserable weather; loved the hard top. Slept better at night when it was parked in London with the Hard top as well. The hard top did leak slightly though and had to be taken in twice to try and rectify/adjust. So in that side of the argument, dont bother!

I would have one if it came as standard. When we change for our new one, not 100% we will choose one as an option but probably will.

996 C4 Cab btw.

Garaged overnight? Don't bother with the hardtop. Its no more secure and scarcely any more weatherproof. (Possibly a little more insulation)

The softtop does not leak..

The softtop DOES NOT leak..

The softtop ABSOLUTELY DOES NOT leak..

I've driven in the most apalling downpours and it's fine. Occasional treatments of the softtop roof can be worthwhile....

Agree hardtop not needed also you got to store it when not in use so that it does not get marked.

thanks for your input slaav and don, i'm near nottingham (london originaly, the concensus seems that its not that important to have a hardtop in the winter.

i think i'll keep an eye on fleabay though in case one comes up at a reasonable price.

its interesting to hear everyones opinions, and i have to admit i am looking forward to the odd bracing drive in the autumn!

someone asked about treating the roof, as i did at the dealer. porsche sell a roof wash and treatment, bothe are about a tenner each. i got them and have to say they work well, specially the roof treatment which is a spray. it beads the water and stops the rain soaking into the roof.

hope this helps.
