It's probably the backs making the noise. First thing to check is if there's any shims behind the pads, if not try fitting some ,you'll probably find the noise will go.

To try a slightly more helpful post from my first smile clevor trevor sell the shims. Also make of pad contributes with some worse than others. However ultimately it is just a fairly common trait that some just chose to live with.

I had mine apart the other day to stop squeel

First thing is to clean of all the dust. I took a hacjsaw blade to the gap in between on the pads the cleaned them up with brake cleaner.

Then my pads were slightly larger than the disks, so they wore with 1mm ish lip on them. I filed this back and no more squeal

Not wishing to hijack the thread, but I have a tapping/rubbing noise from my offside rear irked that comes on sometimes, but stops when the brakes are applied, reappearing when you come off the pedal. I'm guessing it's a loose brake pad or suchlike scratchchin - was worried it was a CV joint but that wouldn't stop with braking I think - anyone else had a similar experience?

Yup mine does/did that. I think the cure is to put a small amount of silicone sealent onto the back of the pad to stick it to the piston.

However, I met an owner a couple of weeks back who said he'd stopped this by fitting stronger springs between the pads, the ones with the pins through.

this is a common problem with some cars. the best cheap cure is to remove the pads and pack the back out with copper grease. This has sorted out any car i have worked on.

As far as I know, pretty much all cerb brakes squeal, unless you have ceramics. It gets worse in the hot dry weather and fades in the damp wetter weather.
