Since I had my Emerald ECU fitted and mapped I've loved the extra performance and smooth power curve but I missed the pops and bangs that characterise the AJP. The latest Emerald update includes the ability to have three maps stored which you can switch between on the fly. So...

I had the upgrade done (cheap) and Jools made me three maps:

1) full power (of course)

2) 95 RON (if I get stuck without 98)

3) pops and bangs (yes !)

So now I have the best of both (all three ?) worlds at the flick of a switch. The p'n'b map makes the car sound - and run - pretty much like it used to before the Emerald i.e like a busy day at the OK Corral.

I'm happy thumbup

Sounds ideal! smile

Any chance of some detail on the cost breakdown? And was the chip and re-map with anything else, like an induction kit? Or standalone?

I ask because I'm tempted by the remap for some practical reasons, but get the impression that it doesn't tend get done as a stand alone mod...

Now that sounds excellent.

i'm interested to know whether or not you can you switch on the fly or do you need to switch her off before making a change?

Am I right in assuming this is the K3 unit and not the M3D ECU? If so, do you know if there is an upgrade path from the old Emerald unit to this new one?

I had a look on the Emerald website, and the price list only showed the old item.

May have to give Joolz a call... phone

so as a general rule does any re-map alter the way the car sounds?

Also, is there a loss of power associated with P&B's?

Lots of questions there...

Phil_Edge -
The Emerald upgrade was £30, just firmware I think. I already have the Whirlwind kit and de-cat so it was just a case of asking Jools to fit the switch and do the mapping runs. About £100 from memory but the car was in for a service so there was other work in progress too.

thegreengoblet -
The switch is genuinely "on the fly", no need to stop the engine or even take your foot off the accelerator. I checked with a PC connected to make sure but the noise tells you that something has happened hehe

neilus -
Mine was a simple upgrade from an early Emerald, I assume it's now a K3 as it seems to have all the features listed. Jools will be able to confirm.

I guess a remap can alter the sound on the ignition side (pops and bangs good, pinking and misfires bad), though not on the exhaust side of course.

InverCerb -
Power loss ? Well, I can't say for sure as I don't have a power curve from the p&b map. It runs a little lumpier but no more than it used to pre-Emerald. I'm not planning to run the p&b map any time when power matters. In a tunnel if I'm 20bhp down I don't mind. biggrin

I'd be happy to give a little "sound check" to anyone passing through Leeds.

yes State of tune of the engine and timing/mixture has a big impact on exhaust note and to some extent the noise level.
You can always tell a well tuned and built motor by the exhaust note whilst its under load imhe

so what does the pop and bang map do? Just throw a load of extra fuel in?

Pass.

Actually I guess that it's slightly more complicated than that as it only pops on the over-run but a rich mixture at the appropriate time will do the trick. It pops at anything over about 2000 rpm.

I've been mulling over whether to go for the Emerald or re-map the stock ECU. Childish though it sounds, the dial-in pop/bang is a strong vote in favour of the former. The crackling overrun is part of the character of the car. I want to tune the car to its potential but I don't want this to be at the cost of said character. Having the choice would be ideal. My 3 year old calls my car 'Poppy' and she loves it. So do I. Also thinking of a de-cat later so the Emerald's remappability comes into play there. I think I'm sold smile

You can dial in and out pops and bangs on the MBE, Paul @ Austec had something to provide switchable maps for the MBE some time ago too.

Excellent. Anyone got a noise meter for an Emerald vs MBE pops & bangs shoot-out ?

Yes, I am joking. biglaugh

Just need to get the funds for the TCS 12sec 1/4 mile package. Not going to be easy this year with baby no.3 due in August. frown

I'm planning the same (performance upgrade, not family upgrade - can't afford the latter wink ). I haven't made the call to TCS yet (Hi trackcar if you're reading) but I'm looking at the 2nd week of June for the same package. Not sure of the lead time on this, better get booked in. This should hopefully bring me closer to "standard" in time for Fighting Torque - I think I would lose v badly in current state of tune, I want to do the old girl justice..

Anyone know yet whether TCS is using open loop for the emerald, or is actually replacing the narrowband sensor on the cerb with a wideband to use the adaptive mapping of the emerald?
