Porous 17" 4.5 wheels?
Discussion
Has anyone else had the problem of tyres going flat on the standard 17" 4.5 alloys? This happened to us a couple of years ago & TVR admitted there was a problem & gave us a slight discount on some spiders.
The thing is I have just found the old 17s are a perfect fit on my 200SX S14a so want to try & fix them. I had one reconditioned at the time but it came back very pitted & the referb people said it had gone porous & the tyre still didn’t say up after the re-coating, so we got the new spiders. But I just got round to checking it properly & it only seems to be leaking from the inner bead. So I was thinking of having the tyre off & turning the inside of the sealing lip to make it air tight. Any one have any insight as to whether this would work?
Thanks in advance

Had the same thing happen to me, originally was informed it was scraped paint on the inside of the rim where air was leaking out slowly, had this fixed.
But low & behold happened again, was informed they suffer from being pouros. So bit the bullet & went for 18" spiders no problems since!! - touching head/wood!!

Hmm sounds all too familiar then. Yes 18" spiders are the answer & with F1s on them they even give a better ride the S02 shod 17"s
But I like a challenge, as I said shaving one referbed didn’t help, it still went down, so we got the spiders. But I didn’t check where it was leaking from & I just found it’s leaking from the two piece valve as well as the rear bead so I’m hoping it may have gone down from the valve then having been left for a few years lost the seal, or the corrosion was so bad on the sealing face the finish isn’t smooth enough for it to seal, the finish over the rest of the wheel is terrible, like very bad orange peel combined with pin holing
The three wheels that leak are stamped 98 on the back & the one that is fine is a later replacement one with no date but has a different finish on the back & no sign of corrosion. So I guess it was a problem with the early ones, a referb specialist told me there are some times problems with sand cast wheels.
Anyhow, thanks for all the replies & I’ll let you know if I have any joy.
