Got a letter through yesterday from Greater Manchester Police informing me I was caught speeding in Radcliffe doing 39 in a 30, didn't even see the camera at the time, only the flashes. On the way back home I saw it, it was a high level one, about 10-15' up (at a guess).

At the risk of a PH flaming, what were you doing driving at 39mph in a 30mph zone? Your speedo is likely to be out too so it was probably reading >40mph.

Secondly it doesn't say much for your observation skills if you can't see a bright camera on a 10' pole.

Sorry but people speeding around urban areas get no sympathy from me.

There are plenty of urban dual carriageways around my locality where the limit has gone from 50, 60 or even 70mph down to wildly inappropriate 30 or 40mph limits. No accidents, changes to the roads layout or similar to justify it, just this mindless "speed bad, slow good" mantra that pervades the fetid brains of our esteemed leaders.

I'm with you on that. In fact a tt in white van was stuck a few feet from my bumper the other day in 30 (I'm indicating about 33). I slowed to 15, when he got pi$$ed off and went past and sped off way above the speed limit. 2 miles down the road in a NSL I caught up with him, and he's caught behind slower traffic he couldn't get past. Shocker! It was a commercial van decked out with phone numbers of where he works. So the missus takes down all the details. Next thing white-van-tt is overtaking the slower traffic (car + caravan doing ~50) on a slightly blind right-hand bend with cross-roads. In fact he passed the caravan exactly as he passed the cross-roads. We got home, phoned the number, and reported tt to the transport manager - who was very courteous, and apologised for the actions of one of their employeess. Whether anything got done, I've no idea. Did I feel better without getting road rage? yes

That's a bit generalistic. In a great many 30mph areas, the limit of 30 is way too low. It's often simply unrealistic for the area and is enough to send many drivers into a kind of numb absent-mindedness from all the dumbing-down.

The tall cameras I've seen are grey, usually behind a tree and 30 feet in the air on a narrow poll. Not very easy to see, especially if you're keeping your eyes on the road looking 9out for all the children we would otherwise be about to kill if it weren't for the life saving cameras rolleyes

It certainly does to the OP - a few MPH less and he'd be £60 heavier.

I will happily do 40+ in a 30 IF the visibility is good, and I can see that there are no pedestrians (or cameras).

I will also happily do 20 in a 30 if it is built up with peds and parked cars.

Does that make me a bad driver?

I live there and don't know anyone who's set it off yet.
I also know the lad who ran over the drunken 15 year old who's parents campaigned to get it put there even though the SCP said there was no justification. Bury council paid for it out of my council tax - so, sorry mate I am indirectly responsible for your woe biggrin
I'll dig out the original thread on it... back in a bit.

Ah, its near Ainsworth Road then.

Well tbh mate, 39mph around there is a bit quick if you don't mind me saying, at any time. A bit too quick.

It was hidden in a tree. I was busy looking for the turning to my mum's road and didn't see it! frown

That's why I asked the question. It could have previously been a section which was 40 or 50mph and had only recently been dropped to 30.

All we've had back is PoD saying that 39mph on Ainsworth Road is a bit too quick and the OP saying they weren't paying attention because they were looking for their mum's house.

I stand by my original statement.

Either the camera was visible or it was hidden. If it was hidden then what was it hidden behind? Could a child have been hiding as well?

What type of camera is this?
http://www.speedcamerasuk.com/speed-camera-types.h...

The only ones I've seen that are 15' up a pole are SPECS and they are over the lane and blindly obvious to anyone paying attention.

Can you provide details of what type of camera this is, that is 15' up a pole and is not likely to be seen by an observant driver?

Who me ?
