New speed cameras tested

Digital cameras on trial in West London

Truvelo has a new speed camera. Cheers.
Truvelo has a new speed camera. Cheers.
We’ve more grim speed camera news for this Friday morning, sadly.

Transport for London (TfL) and the London Safety Camera Partnership (LSCP) are currently conducting trials with camera manufacturer Truvelo of a sophisticated new camera that does not flash when triggered by a passing vehicle.

The trial is taking place at Gillette Corner, Isleworth on the A4 Great West Road.

As well as giving no sign that they have been triggered, the new cameras have a wireless link to Police to send digital images through; fines can be processed within minutes.

The cameras can be used in either forward or rear-facing configurations, taking a photo of the driver as well as the number plate.

Paul Smith, of the Safe Speed Road Safety Campaign Organisation, said: "The fact that you do not know you have been flashed adds more uncertainty to the driver's mind, and uncertainty is never a good thing for safety.”

"If it is to be a deterrent it is better to know where you stand. The camera is aimed at making lots of money for the manufacturer."

Although the cameras are working at present, no fines can be issued as they’ve not yet been approved by the Home Office.

No I think they just have a magenta filter over the light to minimise glare...

To shadytree, Paul Smith's comments are exactly in line with what you are stating. I believe he is against the use of scameras for that very reason! Sorry to state the obvious, but you must do more research before posting. He is most definately on "our" side, ie speed cameras do not equal a safer environment, either for motorists or pedestrians. Only proper policing and awareness will do that, not by driving 3mph over ( or under? ) a preset limit, regardless of road or weather conditions.

Digital images not able to be used as evidence?(Due to possibility of tampering with Photoshop etc) Unless of course this has been changed?

The system only needs to implement a form of digital signature stamp which is created at the time of capture then it can be proved to be unmodified. We use a similar method in the pharmaceutical industry to prove instrument data has not been tampered with when submitting data for a drug license.

Sorry, but if you ask me uncertainty is just plain dangerous !!

Gee, thanks. 'Never good for safety' is pretty close to 'plain dangerous'.

Anyway you have no idea what I'm doing for you folks. I was up until 5am sending PR about Downing Street spin. See: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/SafeSpeedPR/message/... . At 7am David Williams of the London Evening Standard is on the phone asking for quotes for his story which are the quotes you're reading here. See: http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/news/article-2339800... The story is on the front page of today's Evening Standard. At 9am LBC are on the phone booking a live telephone interview which took place at 10:06. Since then I've helped a firm of hauliers to save the driving licence of one of their chaps and issued another - fairly complex - PR off the back of the Evening Standard article. See: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/SafeSpeedPR/message/...

So perhaps a bit of support is in order. See: http://www.safespeed.org.uk/join.html

Sooner rather than later the companies working on anti-camera technology will come up with an answer. The only anti-speed device that is 100% succesful is driver restraint coupled with a police presence(fast disappearing) on our roads. As someone has already said will all this anti-speed technology come to our aid if we are involved in an accident?

slightly off topic but...

I read an article recently about a motorcyclist who had fitted a james bond style number plate, one press of a button and it rotated.

I think companies who manufacture such products should be reported to the relevant authorities as this is clearly illegal..... has anyone got details of such a company so that I may assist the honourable Police force in this country go about its business of collecting money from those evil, viscious criminals who dare to travel above the speed limit?

thanks in advance!

The benefits of safety cameras" has clearly been proved to me this week.

Driving to work in Crawley. On Monday on Turners Hill Road, and was overtaken by someone, who in my opinion couldn't see far enough into the distance to be safe. Indeed he then passed the guy in front of me just approaching on a corner and crest of a hill.

On Thursday on a residential street in Crawley there was a learner driver doing about 20mph, approaching a parked car, so starts to pull out to pass it, only for the car between me and him to decide to overtake. Fortunately the learner or his instructor) was alert and he pulled back in and stopped in time.

This morning approaching the rail bridge by Hazelwick School, the car two in front of me stopped for the red light. The guy between me and him, overttok him and went through on the red!

All these events of course show how "safety cameras" make the roads safer! In fact they expalin why the accident rate is increasing in spite of cameras! Cameras are uaully at spots were overtaking is safest (straight roads with good visibility) as thats also where speeds are fastest! The result is people drove faster where there are no cameras!

A nice indescreet jammer could be just the ticket smile as these are wireless I wonder how hard it is to hack one sat in your car nearby with a wifi enabled laptop...

Paul you are the man! The tireless work you do spreading the word gives us all hope.

biggrin

Looks tempting regardless of the camera possibilities smile
(If anyone wants one mail me, im not in the UK biggrin )

Apart from that, the camera not flashing is yet another blatant way of saying, 'hell, we just want your money'.
Ex:
If you speed past it (say 35 in a 30), and dont realise you should be driving slower (for whatever reason) you aren't going to know you are breaking the law.

I think its just stupid.
Its not preventing anything.
