I just found this while going through some of the online petitions on the Government site.
Basically it outlines an automated speed control for your vehicle (car or bike) controlled by GPS.
So if your driving along at 40 and the speed limit changes to 30, your vehicle will automatically slow to 30!

How dangerous is that going to be?

My apologies if this is old news, did a search and couldnt find anything on it.

In theory as long as everybody has one fitted and the GPS sytem is upgraded sufficiently to be able to cop with the stress then it won't be dangerous at all..

However, it's an all or nothing thing, if they only give half the car's the capability then your bound to get some numpties running into others as they brake. Then again they should not be speeding so therefore should not crash into the back of someone. wink

I can't see why it would be dangerous. It's the only way I know to stop idiots speeding in my road. There's quite a bit of development work going on with this.

Apart from the people driving on the limiter all the time regardless of whether its safe and boxing each other in on motorways. Not to mention problems caused by increased boredom on long motorway journeys - especially with the less able members of Joe Public!!

What needs upgrading? Like when the number of people listening to Radio 2 doubled they had to double the output of the transmitters?

Not really an expert. I just remember reading somewhere that the GPS system was starting to strain under the increased use of sat nav systems and therefore more satelites/ more efficient ones were required. I could be talking complete and utter Bull if i'm honest.

Upgrading to accomdate the local council changing the speed limit of a certain road.

If you sit there on a dual carrigeway at 70 then the limit changes to 50 (like it does on some dual carrigeways in East Anglia for example) there is every chance that the sudden change in speed could result in the person's car behind not slowing quickly enough to not hit you. thats if they have the limiter fitted at all.

Would make driving much more boring! Get in car, put big brick on gas pedal and let the limiter do the rest. Just point an shoot!

Wouldn't be necessary because the new radio 2 listeners would have migrated from radios 3 or 1 thereby keeping the planet in balance.

Bull I think, the sats are transmitters.I don't think they have more "strain" on them if there are more GPS users...

What a nightmare that would be. Disconnecting people from control of their speed, removing the need for them to think about how fast they're going and how fast they *should be* going in those circumstances. That will obviously end with the vast majority with the throttle nailed to the carpet regardless of circumstances, refusing to lift off for any reason, unwilling/unable to speed up and slow down to shuffle round each other in traffic. The whole road system would be reduced to a huge elephant race.

Sorry, that's a bit fuzzy. Could you post it again please? Looks like too many people have read it...

No it's not the number of listeners it's the Government cocking up a technical infrastructure again.
They've been sending the wrong electrons to the wrong radio stations, apparently radio 6 digital has so much excess power they're selling it across to France.

Seriously though, this Intelligent speed control system, an oxymoron if ever I heard one, relies on the system having an up to date digital map, an accurate plot of the speed limits, and an accurate fix, ie it knows exactly where you are on the map.

Just today on an allegedly 100% up-to-date system I have had:-

a) System thinks I'm on a road close to and parallel to the one I'm actually on. Different limits on each road, and it kept flipping between the two as it couldn't make it's mind up. What would it do then? keep altering the speed limit up and down? That'll be fun!

b) System finds that position is not on any road on the map, new construction. What would it do then? Stop? Put the brakes on? Adopt 30kph max?

c) Whilst in mode b) above system thought it had locked onto a local road which had been superceded by the new motorway that had been built. At that point it gave instruction to turn right at T-junction 100 yds ahead. What would ISA do then? Slam the brakes on? That'll be even more fun at 110 kph on a motorway with a line of 18 wheeler semi trailers up your ass!

Tis a load of bollox and wants binning.

If we spent half the money on educating drivers and setting up a tiered licencing system with genuine incentives to be educated and undergo regular retests we might get somewhere.

Don't think he is, streaks old sport, judging by quite a few posts would guess that hwg is definitely "on message" as they say. Know what I mean? nudge nudge.
