Hi there,

A friend's film based photos always look extra special when compared to her digital photos.

Q: What DSLR model do I need to look at to get film like colour range/quality ?

A while ago I took photos of an Indian wedding (now that was plethora of colours !) and I (along with the couple) were very pleased with the results.

Now I'm thinking what the photos would have looked like with a more professional DSLR...

Thanks for any advice.

If you want that deep luscious look, then it is difficult to beat Velvia in a film camera.

Unfortunately, the general rule is that the more you pay, the better image you are going to get. Getting any more specific than that is tricky. Good processing in Photoshop can help, but it can never generate detail that wasn't detected by the sensor in the first place.

Excuse the question, but you're not using a flash are you? It will tend to have a bleaching effect.

As you were...

There is a Velvia plugin for photoshop IIRC.

The Fujifilm FinePix S5 Pro has several Film Simulation modes.

The S5 Pro is generally regarded as having fantastic dynamic range and low noise, and seems to produce best results from portrait work; whereas the Nikon D200 (the camera it's based upon) seems to have the edge at landscape stuff. Might be worth having a look at a S5 Pro for wedding type photography, iirc they are about £950 body only at the moment.

Thanks everyone. I'm going to have a look at a couple of options.

...My friend Rodney works with a chap called Del,
and they have 5 of these arriving Monday morning.
I'm going to reserve 2 (1 as a backup) would you like to order one as well ?

They also have a couple of lightsabres, blue and red only though.
Apparently a Mr Skywalker ordered them but the cheque bounced.

:-)

Velvia . . . oops . . . bought a chemical camera . . . ;-)

Looking forwards to something different . . .

Photography has been suffering lately due to sprinting/hillclimbing commitments . . . 6 wins from 6 events . . . and more fear and untamed terror than you can shake a stick at . . . ;-)

That the one with the interchangeable backs, or the 18 Megapixel version? I've got my order in ....

Anyway, answering the original question the best dSLR for your desires, i.e. you want to do the processing in camera, is the Fuji S5 yes
