My computer works fine when connected to my Dell monitor. When I just took it downstairs and hooked it up to my pioneer 507XD plasma screen, Windows worked perfectly, all the desktop came up as normal, but trying to play back any video files gives me sound, a moving scroll bar as time elapses, but a black screen. I am using Windows XP, media player 10 (also tried VLC, quicktime, realplayer, and media player classic), an HDMI output from my nvidea6800 video card into the plasma.

I tried using irfanview as a player, this gives me picture, but no sound! Bloody computers!

Any ideas what it could be?

I think it's the HMDI lead, I get the same prob with games. (didn't try the movies)
My solution was to connect the PC to the Plasma using a DVI (for the GPU) to VGA (for the TV)cable, and everything woorks and looks fine.

From memory, a certain brand of plasma has a "difference of opinion" with the HDMI spec - so early sky+ boxes had issues to start with as well frown

I was having similar issues. What you need to do is instead of using the DVI or HDMI output of the video card (which shouldn't actually be used with TV's Nvidea say) use the TV out port which looks like an S-Video or SVHS port. It is actually a 7 pin component out port and when used with a component dongle (7 pin plug to component) can be connected to the Component in on your TV.
