Apportioning costs: VAT
Discussion
We had a debate a few weeks ago about aportioning the cost of builing work on my home office. It turns out that the materials may be more expensive than I had first thought, but that the labour will be less:
£1800 in labour (no VAT as the builder isn't registered) and £560 in materials excluding VAT. I have measured it up and worked it out that about 50% of the work is work on the offices and the rest on the house we live in (we live upstairs and the offices are below).
Not withstanding all the arguments about whether I should try and claim some of these costs at all (which we have had) I was wondering if, should I decide to claim some of the costs, if I should the whole of the materials costs and reclaim all the VAT, and then enough of the labour costs to make it up to the 50%, or if I should just claim 50% of each cost?

Claim it, what's the worst that could happen?
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Another po faced bespectacled VAT man delighting in finding something to justify his pension? Last time he was highly pleased at 65p he found on a jar of visitors coffee I had unlawfully claimed as "foodstuffs are not vatable"

If you claim it then:
1. You may not have another vat inspection.
2. You have another inspection and they may not spot it.
3. You have another inspection, they spot it and accept your explanation.
4. You have another inspection, they spot it, don't accept your explanation, and you then have to repay the VAT you should have paid in the first place.
You're unlikely to get a fine for a small mistake.
