Best thing (and its cheaper than the so called car wheel cleaners) is Domestos spray bleach.

I just use a regular car polish rather then a specific wheel cleaner. All pretty much the same stuff unless its a heavy duty wheel cleaner which will rip the lacquer finish off the wheel and start the cycle of corrosion, but hey, looks nice at first!

Use a dry terry cloth to get all the brake dust etc off (does not spread it about like a wet sponge) then wash/wax.

Could this be corrosive?

Not if you simply use it to remove the crap then rinse off

I find Meguiar's Hot Rims spray brilliant.

Use it with the Meggie's Wheel Brush to get to the back of the wheels and an Autoglym Hi-Tech Wheel Brush to get rid of any stubborn bits and you'll be laughing.

There's a full review available through my profile...smile

As far as I am concerned it has got to be Wonder Wheels Alloy wheel cleaner, I don't wash my other car very much and so the wheels get in to a right state, all I do is quickly brush the wheels with Wounder Wheels (and I mean quick) then a spray with water and bingo, bright clean wheels, it's fantastic stuff.

Totally agree nothing touches wonder wheels which is why it has won best wheel cleaner for 4 years in auto express.

Wonder wheels works because it is incredibly aggressive. I have seen what it will do with sustained useage. Use it very infrequently at best. Normal car wash with some non alkaline based cleaner (such as P21S) is best and finish with normal car polish/wax.

Cerby (including wheels) gets Auto Glym shampoo'd and Mer waxed - tyres finshed with a 'back to black' type product.

Then I thrash around in the rain 10 minutes later leaving it dirtier than when I started?!

For my 8-spoke OZ wheels - for the tyres I use Turtle Wax Premium series tyre dressing on the side walls - lasts longer than the sprays I have used.
For the alloys - Wash off with hose, then wash with Turtle Wax Nanotech schampoo, rinse, dry, then Meguiars NXT metal polish.
hope that helps (even though the bank holiday has past...)

I use Autoglym Super Resin Polish (as per the first wax coat on the bodywork) - cleans the wheels a treat.

You know what?! The best stuff I've used is 'Dr Beckmans oven cleaner'. Yup, really, and at about £2.50 a go too from your local supermarket. It's one of those environmentally flavoured non aggressive types so wont return your alloys to bauxite.
