Age Of Empires II: LAN problems

A while ago, me and a friend tried to setup a game of AOE II on a wireless LAN. No matter what we tried it wouldnt work, after setting up on one computer, it just kept saying "looking for games" on the 2nd machine. We even tried plugging both machines into the router but still nothing worked. What are we doing wrong?

I should say one of us was using the standard disc and one was using the conquerors expansion disc as they came in a pack together. Would this be the cause even though we setup a game which used maps and teams available on both discs?

If they both have firewalls, turn them off and see if that works. Check they're patched to the same version. If they can ping each other that's a good start!
