Recommended Engine Oil ?

Does anybody have any well informed advice on recommended engine oil for a 4.0 Speed Six please?

My owners manual specifies Mobil 1 once run in, but I have been advised by Autocraft/TVRcraft (Salisbury) to use 15-50 mineral oil.

I asked a couple of dealers and they suggested 5-40 or 10-40 semi or fully synthetic.

I am sticking with the Mobil 1 as per the owners manual until I am convinced otherwise.

Hi Tuscman,I am currently running Castrol Edge 10w60, Although the viscometrics are different to the mobile 1 .It is fully synthetic and will maintain a thicker film in the event of temperature excursions. Castrol do a Edge sport 10w60 but i use the Edge 10w60 as it was developed for the BMW M series and has a greater slug of esther for extra protection

I run Castrol as well and my local TVR indy swears by the stuff. My oil pressure is a lot more consistent than Mobil 1.

I use Mobil 1 15-50 fully synthetic. Works well. The engine is nice and quiet (exhausts aside ) and the oil pressure is always good (45-60 psi when 2500 rpm and above). I run a '01 4.0 ltr S spec with 28k miles, no rebuild.

Shell Helix in mine as put in by dealer, although it says full synthetic, Oilman says it's a semi. Anyway, my engine currently does not have a drinking problem so not a current concern.

Just had the 6k service done after a rebuild a year ago, told to use 5w-40 fully synthetic by the dealer - seems to be no common opinion!? but all seem to work, basically don't use crap designed for lawnmowers

TVR Power: Semi 10W/40, so I use Mobil's Super version of that

My question is half way down the thread

"5w-40 or 0w-40 synthetic, Mobil, Castrol, Silkolene, Motul etc are all ideal".
