I am changing the top steering UJ on a 92 Griffith and need some advice. The old one was badly corroded onto the splines and wouldnt budge so had to hacksaw it off. Now Ive come to fit the new one there is not enough clearance between the end of the steering shaft and the intermediate shaft to get it in. Is it possible to withdraw the steering shaft about 10mm to give clearance(and how)or is there another way ?

What you need to do is loosen off the other UJ, so that you can slide the shaft around. You can tap/slide the other UJ all the way down each shaft until you can get just enough clearance.

Thanks Wildfire. Yes Ive slackened the bottom UJ and pushed in the intermediate shaft as far as it will go but still need about 5mm more before the joint will go on the steering shaft.

What's stopping the top part of the intermediate shaft from moving further - is it the top of the shaft hitting the UJ or where it tapers going into the UJ ?

You could file a bit off either the edge of the UJ or either end of the intermediate shaft, or both. I never thought mine would go back together but with a little bit of gentle filing and having a bit of a beserker moment it all suddenly dropped together.

Hi

It is tight, but if you loosen all the four joints (two per UJ), it normally goes on with some persuasion. Otherwise loosen the rack, it has only four bolts, so real easy.

Thanks guys. Both UJs are right up against the tapers on the shafts so will get it on the lathe tomorrow and take a nats off each taper. If thats not enough then it looks like loosening the steering rack.
