I guess it is cranking over, but not firing up? Due to the magnificently thought out location of the Coil packs, they are in the V of the engine, and water drips down on to them from the front engine panel. The tops of the coil packs also have a lip on them, perfect for collecting water, and as they tend to start cracking with age, water gets in them. Give it 3 weeks of hot sunny weather and it will dry out and be fine smile Or use a rag and a hair dryer to dry them out.

Hi Bagua,
Keep your finger on the black button - should start within about 20 secs.

If not, trust me on this, keep your finger on the button whilst lowering the windows then press the full beam flash.

Don't ask!

I've found that pressing the heater knob usually is the best addition to keeping your finger on the black button or...

So there's an aftermarket opportunity here. Tiny umbrellas for the coil packs, or more realistically something like a neoprene cover to keep the water off the top?

Although not strictly his area of extertise, Im guessing Carl Baker would be worth a call? He certainly seemed to know what he was talking about (over the phone as well!) when trying to trace a recent battery drain on my car.

Good stuff. So it's a 'he' is it? I guess that figures, from the way you were spanking him last month <insert Homo gif> smile

That's a question only the wife can answer wink. I have sowed the seed of the idea, now just have to nurture it - bring her a cup of tea in bed and feed & dress the kids whilst casually bringing the subject up, you know the procedure. My strongest argument so far is that I have some laps left on my ticket, so it would 'save us money'. Fingers crossed I'll be there. Do you think a 3 year old and 9 month old would enjoy a few laps round the ring? hehe

Ok, I'll have a go. The 13.6v may not be a problem, it may just mean that the battery voltage is low and combined with the low power output of the alternator with the engine at idle, the alternator cannot deliver 14v. As you rev the motor up, the alternator spins faster too, produces more power and hence is capable of sustaining 14v with the load on it, so the voltage you see on the test meter goes up. Three amps may be a problem as they present an additional load on the alternator and if it cannot supply enough power to both charge the battery and power up your the amps, the battery will discharge, eventually going flat. However, you have a 140A Landrover alternator in the Cerby, so you'd have thought it would manage ok.

Carl's number is 07720723407 if you need it.

I'd suggest what you could do is fire her up, turn your system up to it's normal level and see what a voltmeter across the battery says when you rev the engine to say 3000 rpm. I've been through a similar charging saga with my bike and apparently modern sealed batteries like quite a high charging voltage - allegedly ~14.5 volts. Less than this causes a slow death of the battery as it allows sulphates to form on the plates in the battery, which never get removed. Hence the battery loses capacity over time and also the ability to supply the necessary current to crank the engine over. I have wondered if insufficient charging voltage is the reason that Cerbs kill batteries. On my bike I changed the regulator rectifier and bingo, no more problems, but I don't know if the same can be done on a car alternator.

Baguaman - I've been to see Carl and talked about Hi-fi and amps in Cerbs, he'll probably have a good laugh at you when you tell him you have 3 amps, you'll know why after you have talked to him smile
