... knew I shouldn't have gone shopping today ...

http://www.europe-nikon.com/product/en_GB/products...

Anyone know a good online place to buy filters.

I keep a UV filter on my lenses to protect the lens, is this the best idea ? or should I be using a different filter, I was thinking perhaps a circular polarised jobbie ...

Skylight's UV's etc are good to protect the lens, though they will reduce the image quality slightly. Multi-coated filters are better quality so go for those if possible, but bare in mind they are harder to clean. Then there are digital optimised filters that supposedley reduce reflections when used with digital sensor - this maybe just marketing hype, I don't know.

You certainly don't want a polariser on there all the time - it will reduce the light significantly and affect the scene dramatically. Great for landscapes, but not full time on a telephoto.

I've been eyeing one of these up for a while. Difficult to justify to myself as I don't use my Sigma 70-300 all that often. I'm waiting to see if Nikon come out with a VR replacement for the 18-70mm lens that I have on my camera 90% of the time.

I saw an interesting few comments on a thread last week; why put a £30 filter on a £1000 lens?

Which got me thinking....so much so in fact, I might just start a thread.
