Here I am begging for help again..

I don't know how many of you are familiar with Anya Hindmarch's ¨Be a Bag¨ handbags - but I've decided I really need one. You supply the image you want on your bag and its made into a holdall etc etc.
Here in lies the problem - I still can't take a photo. My camera isn't great but I do have a tripod!! (hopefully be able to buy a camera soon if part b of this post works) I want my hamster on the bag (I love that little beast
) and just can't get a good picture. Also need the backdrop to be really kitsche (sp) - I'm thinking very indian style - bright colours, lots of paisley and gold. Any ideas how I'm going to achieve this (and if I can get the hamster to wear a little costume that would be immense - he does this fab Buddha pose and its what I want to capture)
Part B.
I've been making lots of jewellery and stuff to hopefully sell to fund a gemmology (sp) course and jewellery making course (proper stuff) but no matter what I do I can't get a good pic either. What should I be looking to do to get a really good striking pic?
Thanks for all your help yet again - you people are fab.

Cannot help you with part A, I'm afraid... my methods of achieving funny poses from hamsters wouldn't be condoned by the RSPCA and probably would cause the untimely demise of your beloved pet.
Part B however - have a look here, should learn you all you need to photograph jewelry, gems etc., even with simple means:

Actually, they do use some commercial/professional stuff there, but you'll be amazed what you can achieve with some simple DIY, some thin white cloth, a few desktop lights and some inventivity... scourge the web for "DIY softbox" etc.
