mine is the same, a previous owner put a basic on off toggle switch on the cable between the nob and the fan. the toggel site just out of view under the dash. if I want hot air then on and the fans go full tilt - no speed control. I have posted on here about this before thinking that since someone went to the trouble of getting this work around the busted button/control unit/cable was a sod to fix. I have never had a reply so forgive me but it's nice (in and odd way) to hear of someone else with a similar prob. C'mon guys anyone fixed up their heather controls before????

is it worth finding another local PHer and swap heater control boxes for a test (under dash black box)??

Mine has done this before, I found it was the block connectors from the black box of electronics in the passenger footwell. Used a bit of contact cleaner and has been ok since.
